Reiner Yells A Name When He Turns Into A Titan

Posted on May 3, 2023May 3, 2023 by CharlotteM

Voice acting is an important aspect of anime production, as it allows the characters to come to life and convey their emotions and personalities through their voices. In the dubbing process, the original Japanese audio is replaced with a translated version in another language, usually English, for audiences who prefer to watch the anime with dubbed audio rather than subtitles.

Many anime dubs are produced by specialized studios such as Funimation, which has been in the business for almost three decades and has built a reputation for high-quality dubbing. The company employs a pool of talented voice actors who are often featured in multiple anime series. This has led to some viewers noticing that the same voices tend to crop up across different anime titles.

Some of the most prominent voice actors in Funimation’s roster include Chris Sabat, Colleen Clinkenbeard, and Mike McFarland, among others. These actors not only lend their voices to various anime characters, but they also take on additional roles such as ADR directors, writers, and line producers, which contribute to the overall quality of the dub.

In the case of “Attack on Titan,” which has become one of Funimation’s most successful properties, Mike McFarland plays a key role as both the ADR director and the voice of the supporting character Jean Kirstein. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, McFarland revealed an interesting detail about the dubbing process for the series.

Specifically, he shared that the voice actors for each Titan Shifter’s human form also supply the roars for their Titan counterparts. For example, Bryce Papenbrook, who voices the main character Eren Yeager, also does the roar for Eren’s Attack Titan. However, McFarland added that there was one instance where his co-star Robert McCollum, who voices the character Reiner Braun, sometimes says his own name while voicing the Armored Titan’s roars. McFarland explained that the word “Rob” is close enough to “roar,” and the subsequent sound mixing distorts the original sound so that “Rob” becomes indistinguishable.

Overall, voice acting and dubbing are essential elements of the anime industry, and studios like Funimation play a significant role in bringing these productions to a wider audience.
