Pokemon GO ignores HearUsNiantic movement, won’t change remote raid policy

Posted on May 20, 2023May 19, 2023 by CharlotteM

Niantic, the developer of Pokemon GO, has finally broken its silence regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding Remote Raids, which has become one of the most widely discussed issues within the game’s community this year. Pokemon GO, known for its immersive gameplay that encourages players to venture outdoors and interact with the real world, faced a significant challenge when the global pandemic limited people’s ability to go outside and engage in physical activities.

To adapt to the circumstances, Niantic introduced remote passes, allowing players to participate in raids and other in-game activities from the comfort of their homes. This temporary solution proved essential in ensuring that the Pokemon GO community could continue enjoying the game during a challenging period. However, as the world slowly returned to normalcy, Niantic made adjustments to Remote Raids, including modifications to pricing and limitations on the use of remote passes. These changes sparked a wave of dissatisfaction and frustration among a segment of Pokemon GO players.

Addressing the Remote Raids controversy in an interview with Dot Esports, Pokemon GO Director Michael Steranka and Senior Producer John Funtanilla shared their perspectives on the matter. Steranka acknowledged the backlash from the community and mentioned that Niantic had taken note of the feedback. However, the team’s focus has been primarily on introducing new features, such as the recent addition of Shadow Raids, rather than revisiting the Remote Raids issue. Steranka explained that the decision to adjust Remote Raids was a challenging one, as the team had identified certain behaviors associated with the excessive use of remote passes that were not aligned with the intended Pokemon GO experience. While specific details regarding these “unhealthy behaviors” were not provided, Steranka emphasized that Niantic’s decision aimed to promote a healthier and more immersive gameplay environment.

In addition to the Remote Raids discussion, Steranka confirmed that Niantic has no plans to directly address the concerns raised by the HearUsNiantic movement. This movement, initiated by frustrated Pokemon GO players, seeks to express discontent with the Remote Raids changes and the lack of communication from Niantic. Despite the movement gaining traction and raising awareness of the community’s concerns, Steranka stated that Niantic remains committed to its decision on Remote Raids and does not foresee addressing the issue directly. Funtanilla echoed Steranka’s sentiment, expressing confidence in the development team’s decision and emphasizing that they hope their actions will speak louder than words.

These statements by Steranka and Funtanilla have ignited a passionate debate within the Pokemon GO community, with players expressing mixed reactions and varying degrees of agreement or disagreement. While some players remain unconvinced by Niantic’s explanation and call for more transparent communication, others appreciate the ongoing introduction of new features, such as the highly anticipated Shadow Raids and the upcoming addition of Master Balls coinciding with the game’s seventh anniversary.

As the discourse continues, Pokemon GO enthusiasts eagerly await further developments and improvements in the game, hoping for a balance between the evolving needs of the player community and Niantic’s vision for the future of Pokemon GO.
