Explanation for Gintoki’s wooden sword in Gintama

Posted on May 11, 2023May 11, 2023 by CharlotteM

Gintama is a popular anime series that has been captivating audiences with its unique blend of comedy, action, and drama. The series centers around the adventures of Gintoki Sakata, a former samurai who now works as a freelancer in a world where aliens have invaded and taken over the government. Gintoki is known for always carrying a wooden sword, which is often seen as a disadvantage compared to the more advanced weapons used by his enemies. However, as viewers of the series will know, Gintoki’s wooden sword, also known as Toyako Bokuto, is no ordinary weapon.

The Toyako Bokuto is so named because it was purchased by Gintoki on a field trip to Lake Toya, where the inscription on the sword’s handle reads “Lake Toya”. The sword was originally meant to be a substitute weapon after the Bakufu or Shogunate banned the usage of swords following the invasion of Amanto on earth. However, Gintoki carries the wooden sword as a way to adhere to his Samurai spirit.

What makes Gintoki’s Toyako Bokuto unique is that it is actually one of the most powerful weapons ever created. It may look like an ordinary bokken, a wooden sword used for training kenjutsu, but it is eventually revealed to be a Hoshikudaki, which translates to Star Smasher. This wooden sword is made from a ten-thousand-year-old tree from an unknown planet, and it wields the power to cut through anything, including metal swords, boulders, and even a meteor.

Gintoki’s skill with the Toyako Bokuto is such that he has been able to defeat some of the most powerful opponents in the series. For example, he used the sword against Housen, an elite Yato warrior who was the ruler of Yoshiwara Paradise district and a former commander of the 7th division within the Harusame Space Pirates. Despite Housen’s strength and power equivalent to Umibouzu, Gintoki defeated him using just his Toyako Bokuto. He also overwhelmed Utsuro, the most powerful antagonist in the series, using the same weapon.

While the Toyako Bokuto has been broken multiple times in the series, it remains a powerful weapon that Gintoki carries with him at all times. Despite its power, however, Gintoki’s Samurai spirit is the true source of his strength. Even with a broken sword, he is able to overpower his opponents through his sheer willpower and determination.

The origins of the Toyako Bokuto and its powers have never been fully explained in the series, leaving fans to speculate on its true nature. Some believe that it is embedded with the power of Altana, the primary energy source in the series that influenced the universe and is described as the “backbone” for much of the Amanto’s advanced technology.

Gintama is known for its unique blend of comedy, action, and drama, and Gintoki’s Toyako Bokuto is just one of the many elements that makes the series so popular with fans. It is a testament to the power of the Samurai spirit and the idea that it is the person who wields the weapon, not the weapon itself, that ultimately determines its strength. Gintoki’s wooden sword may seem like a simple and inferior weapon, but in the hands of a skilled warrior like Gintoki, it is truly a force to be reckoned with.
