Explaining the Paths in Attack on Titan

Posted on May 3, 2023May 3, 2023 by CharlotteM

The Paths are the mystical channels that link all the Subjects of Ymir in Attack on Titan, transcending the physical realm in which the majority of the story occurs. These channels are invisible to the human eye, but they transport the flesh and bones of Titans and alter the memories and biological makeup of the Subjects of Ymir, mainly through the Founding Titan. The Paths are crucial in Titan transformations, which first appeared when Ymir ate Marcel in her Pure Titan state, transporting her to a land covered in white soil that stretched infinitely in all directions, and lit up with dazzling auroras.

The paths lead to a glowing tree-like structure that represents the Founding Titan, known as the “Coordinate,” where all paths converge. This coordinate first appeared to Ymir after her demise, where she found herself in the world of the paths and encountered the newly formed Coordinate, which had only three paths corresponding to Ymir’s daughters. Over time, as her daughters bore children and passed on the Power of Titans, the paths expanded to encompass all the Nine Titans and the Eldian race.

Besides transferring bone and flesh, the paths can also transfer memories, allowing Titan shifters to access the recollections of their predecessors, gaining information or battle experience. The paths also transcend time through the Attack Titan, as the holders can view the memories of their successors in the future, allowing them to change the past. The world of the paths is a dimensional plane that can be accessed by the Founding Titan, and time and space seem to expand infinitely towards the horizon. Those transported to this place can experience an eternity pass by in a matter of seconds compared to the real world.

Eren’s entry into the world of the paths halted Ymir from fulfilling Zeke’s wish to prevent Subjects of Ymir from reproducing. Eren offered her a choice between Zeke’s plan and his own, which involved the widespread decimation of the global population with the aid of the Wall Titans on Paradis. When finally given a chance to gain her own freedom, Ymir chose to give up her power to Eren, the one person who had ever shown her kindness. Through the Paths, Ymir granted Eren the power to access all previous Titans’ abilities, enabling him to initiate the Rumbling and potentially rule the world as the most powerful being. The Paths have proven to be an essential concept in Attack on Titan, linking the characters, their memories, and experiences, and ultimately defining the story’s ending.
