“Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 223 Explores New Binding Vow Technique in Gojo’s Battle Against Sukuna”
In the latest installment of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 223 reveals yet another innovative application of Binding vows demonstrated by Gojo Satoru and Utahime Iori.
Jujutsu Kaisen continues to impress with its well-defined power system that remains consistent even as new jujutsu concepts and techniques are introduced. Binding vows, in particular, have showcased various forms and functions throughout the series. In Chapter 223, Gojo Satoru and Utahime Iori unveil a fresh approach to utilizing these vows.
Binding vows are essentially agreements made by jujutsu sorcerers to trade some of their strength in exchange for a corresponding enhancement to another ability. So far, they have taken on different manifestations. One example is heavenly restrictions, which boost a sorcerer’s cursed energy while weakening their physical body, or vice versa. Another example is the act of “revealing one’s hand,” where a sorcerer explains their cursed technique to opponents, thereby amplifying its effect. Most recently, Jujutsu Kaisen reveals that the mere activation of a cursed technique inherently invokes a binding vow.
In preparation for the battle against Ryomen Sukuna, Gojo sought the assistance of Utahime and Principal Gakuganji. Utahime used her Solo Forbidden Area Cursed Technique to enhance their abilities, while the Principal facilitated a ritual for activating their cursed techniques. Instead of opting for instant activation, Gojo and Utahime chose to perform the rituals traditionally, incorporating chants, music, hand signs, and dances. Although unnecessary for expert sorcerers of their caliber, they employed this approach for a specific purpose.
By prolonging the activation process of their cursed techniques, Gojo and Utahime exploited the binding vow inherent in the ritual, resulting in heightened potency of their respective techniques. If they had prioritized speed, they would have achieved normal power levels. However, their focus on strength through the complete activation ritual allowed Gojo to achieve 200% effectiveness of his Limitless Cursed Technique, while Utahime achieved 120% effectiveness.
Despite amassing an unprecedented amount of cursed energy through the activation ritual, Gojo and Utahime managed to evade Sukuna’s detection due to a cloaking barrier erected by Kiyotaka Ijichi. As a result, Sukuna remained unaware of Gojo’s first attack—a Hollow Purple technique amplified to 200%—until it materialized right in front of him. Although Sukuna managed to deflect the worst of the blow, he sustained injuries to his arms, whereas a lesser sorcerer would have been obliterated on the spot.
While Sukuna’s injuries are already healing using reverse cursed technique, he enters this battle at a disadvantage compared to Gojo. Sukuna won’t have the opportunity to activate his technique through an elaborate ritual and will operate on normal cursed energy output levels. Despite Sukuna’s impressive base strength, facing Gojo Satoru with any form of handicap could prove to be a fatal mistake. After all, Gojo has earned the title of “the strongest” in Jujutsu Kaisen for a reason.
