Gintama: 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei spin-off is getting an anime adaptation

Posted on May 25, 2023May 25, 2023 by CharlotteM

During the recent Gintama 2023 event, it was announced that the spin-off novel of Gintama, titled “3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei” or “Class 3-Z’s Teacher Ginpachi,” will be receiving an anime adaptation. The adaptation of Tomohito Osaki’s novel will be handled by Studio BN Pictures and is part of the 20th-anniversary project for the popular Gintama series.

The exciting news was accompanied by a trailer for the upcoming anime, which showcased various references to the original Gintama anime as well as other popular series like Spy x Family and Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s worth noting that short clips based on the novel were previously shown at the end of Gintama TV anime episodes, building anticipation among fans for this spin-off adaptation. Notably, the character Ginpachi will be voiced by the talented Tomokazu Sugita, who also voices the series’ main protagonist, Gintoki.

The “3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei” spin-off novel began serialization in 2006 under Shueisha’s Jump J Books imprint, with the final volume (8th) releasing in 2018. The story revolves around Sakata Ginpachi, the central character, as he takes on the role of a teacher for a class filled with peculiar and distinctive students. The original Gintama manga, created by Hideaki Sorachi, enjoyed a successful run from 2003 to 2019. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2003 to September 2018, followed by Jump Giga from December 2018 to February 2019. The concluding chapters were released exclusively on the Gintama app between May and June 2019.

Gintama has already proven its popularity with its previous TV anime adaptations, which were produced by Sunrise and later BN Pictures. The animated journey began with an OVA by Sunrise, specifically created for Jump Festa 2006. Eventually, BN Pictures took over the animation duties starting from the fourth season, titled Gintama°. The TV anime series ran for an impressive 367 episodes, concluding in 2018. In addition to the TV anime, the franchise boasts a range of OVAs, movies, and specials. The most recent film, titled Gintama: The Very Final, premiered in 2021, further solidifying the enduring appeal of the series.

Fans of Gintama outside Japan will be pleased to know that VIZ Media has licensed the manga in English under the title “Gin Tama.” The story is set in the Edo period, where samurai were once highly regarded until the invasion of extraterrestrial beings known as the Amanto resulted in a revolution that modernized Japan. In this anachronistic city of Edo, the former samurai Gintoki strives to make a living by taking on odd jobs. Along the way, he is joined by Shinpachi, an aspiring samurai, and Kagura, a remarkably strong girl. Despite their bond, Gintoki has a knack for making his comrades work for free, all while indulging in his love for Shonen Jump and strawberry milk, prioritizing his own needs over trivial matters like rent or supporting others.

With the upcoming anime adaptation of “3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei,” fans of Gintama can look forward to exploring an exciting spin-off storyline within the rich and captivating universe of the series, further celebrating its 20th anniversary.
