Gintama’s spinoff anime pays homage to One Piece

Posted on May 11, 2023May 11, 2023 by CharlotteM

Gintama, a popular anime series, is set to receive a spinoff that pays tribute to one of the most beloved anime series of all time, One Piece. According to Anime Senpai, the opening sequence of the upcoming spinoff directly mirrors the famous Gol D. Roger execution scene that was featured in One Piece’s first animated opening. In the Gintama spinoff, Gintoki Sakata, the protagonist of the series, replaces Roger, while the skull-and-crossbones on the pirate ships’ sails are replaced by Gintama iconography. The opening sequence was revealed during the Gintama Ato no Matsuri event announcing the series, where Hiroshi Kitadani performed One Piece’s first opening theme, “We Are.”

Gintama has gained a reputation for its ability to spoof designs and concepts from other popular anime series, and the spinoff is set to continue in this tradition. In fact, the anime’s first official trailer has already poked fun at several popular series, including the hugely popular Spy x Family. The spinoff is based on Tomohiko Osaki’s light novel, Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-sensei, which follows the titular character, a high school teacher. This spinoff is just one of several projects designed to commemorate Gintama’s 20th anniversary, and more announcements are expected to follow until 2026.

The original Gintama series was written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi and was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2003 to September 2018. The manga continued serialization in Jump Giga from December 2018 to February 2019 and ended on the Gintama app in June 2019. The series is set in a version of Japan that has been overrun by aliens, who have enslaved the country’s citizens as sweatshop workers. The story revolves around the misadventures of Gintoki, a young samurai-in-training named Shinpachi Shimura, and an alien girl named Kagura, who work for an odd jobs shop called Yoruzuya Gin-chan.

Aside from the long-running anime series, which has a total of 367 episodes, there have been several Gintama films. The first film, Gintama: The Movie, was released in April 2010 and was directed by Shinji Takamatsu. The film centers around Gintoki’s search for a legendary sword, while his friends try to locate his missing friend, Kotaro Katsura. Another film, titled Gintama: The Final Movie, premiered in 2013, and a sequel, Gintama: The Very Final, was released in 2021. The series was also adapted into a live-action movie in 2017, directed by Yuichi Fukuda and starring Shun Oguri, Masaki Suda, and Kanna Hashimoto as Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura, respectively.

Currently, the Gintama anime series is available on Hulu, but there is no projected release window for the upcoming spinoff at this time.
