In a user-voted contest by the Facebook page “Anime Tournament,” Genryusai Shingekuni Yamamoto from Bleach emerged as the undisputed champion of anime’s most badass old man. The Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 garnered 2.9k votes in the final bracket, leaving the second-place contender with 1.5k votes. Known for his power and popularity, Yamamoto prevailed over formidable characters such as One Piece’s Whitebeard and Hunter x Hunter’s Isaac Netero.
This competition marked the conclusion of a trilogy where Guts from Berserk claimed the title of most badass male character and Bleach’s Retsu Unohana won as the most badass female character. The Facebook page has now launched a new tournament to determine the best 90s anime, featuring renowned titles like Dragon Ball Z, Trigun, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Bleach, created by Tite Kubo, originally serialized as a manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump and was later adapted into an anime by Studio Pierrot. After a ten-year hiatus, the series made a comeback in 2022 with Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War, which adapts the final arc of the manga. Fans and critics have received the revival with immense enthusiasm.
