In a startling development, children in Dallas, Texas were sent home from school carrying a rather unconventional item in their backpacks: a book featuring the beloved character Winnie-the-Pooh, imparting crucial knowledge on how to survive school shootings, as reported by The Guardian. The book, titled Stay Safe, has raised alarm and sparked concerns among parents and educators in the Dallas area. Interestingly, this book was produced by a law enforcement consulting firm based in Houston, further adding to the intrigue surrounding its distribution.
According to Ed Pilkington’s report, the Stay Safe book showcases the iconic honey-loving bear, created by AA Milne and illustrated by EH Shepard, taking on the role of a guide for children, teaching them how to respond in the event of a mass shooting. Its subtitle, “If there is danger, let Winnie-the-Pooh and his Crew show you what to do: Run Hide Fight,” succinctly captures the essence of the tactics advocated by the FBI in such situations. Inside its pages, adorned with illustrations featuring other beloved characters from the Hundred Acre Wood, the book advises children with simple yet potentially life-saving instructions. For instance, it urges them to “RUN like Rabbit instead of stay” if they can safely escape and to “HIDE like Pooh does until the police appear” if danger lurks nearby. Accompanying this advice is a delightful drawing of Pooh burying his head in a pot of honey, symbolizing the importance of staying concealed.
Continuing its instructive narrative, the book portrays Kanga and Roo wearing boxing gloves on the subsequent page, accompanied by a message that emphasizes the need to fight back if escape is not possible: “If danger finds us, don’t stay, run away. If we can’t get away, we have to FIGHT with all our might.” By incorporating familiar characters and relatable scenarios, the Stay Safe book strives to empower children with practical strategies while navigating potentially life-threatening situations.
It is worth noting that the use of Winnie-the-Pooh in this context is not an official endorsement or collaboration. In fact, due to Winnie-the-Pooh entering the public domain in 2022, third parties have the freedom to incorporate the beloved character into their own works. This legal change has enabled the law enforcement consulting firm to utilize Winnie-the-Pooh’s recognizable presence to effectively engage and educate young readers on the topic of school shooting preparedness.
The inclusion of mass shootings in this children’s book reflects a larger debate surrounding this distressing issue within the state of Texas. Ever since the tragic incident involving elementary schoolers in Uvalde, the topic has remained a subject of heated discussion. In response, the state’s Republican leadership has prioritized fortifying schools with enhanced security measures. Notably, they recently closed a loophole in state law that previously hindered the inclusion of certain mental health information in the national background check system. However, when it comes to more comprehensive gun reforms like implementing fully universal background checks, imposing restrictions on military-style semiautomatic rifles, or reconsidering the state’s recently-enacted permitless carry law, it appears that any significant progress or debate on these fronts has come to a standstill for the foreseeable future.
