Will The Little Mermaid remake break Disney’s $1 billion trend and recover?

Posted on June 20, 2023June 20, 2023 by CharlotteM

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has disappointed at the box office, breaking Disney’s trend of $1 billion successes. This raises concerns about the future prospects of Disney’s live-action remakes and whether they can recover from this setback. Despite the extensive marketing and hype surrounding The Little Mermaid, the film has not lived up to the success of previous Disney remakes. This underperformance may indicate a decline in the overall trend of success for Disney’s remakes.

The Little Mermaid remake is part of Disney’s ongoing strategy of reimagining beloved animated classics in live-action. This trend gained momentum with the release of Cinderella in 2015, which demonstrated the audience’s appetite for faithful adaptations. Since then, Disney has enjoyed considerable success with remakes like The Jungle Book, Aladdin, and The Lion King. However, The Little Mermaid’s lackluster performance suggests that the formula may be losing its appeal.

The fact that The Little Mermaid is not projected to reach $1 billion at the box office is surprising, considering the achievement of most other Disney Renaissance remakes. The Disney Renaissance refers to a period of notable success for Disney films from The Little Mermaid in 1989 to Tarzan in 1999. While previous remakes like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin crossed the billion-dollar mark, The Little Mermaid seems to be an exception, failing to replicate the same level of success.

The disappointing box office results for The Little Mermaid are even more striking when compared to its counterparts. For instance, The Jungle Book (2016) earned $966.6 million, further highlighting the film’s underperformance. As of now, The Little Mermaid has only generated $414.2 million in box office revenue, predominantly from the United States and Canada.

The lack of international viewership appears to be a significant factor contributing to The Little Mermaid’s struggles at the box office. This reliance on international markets is a common characteristic of Disney’s live-action remakes, making it a cause for concern in this case.

The impact of The Little Mermaid’s box office failure on Disney’s future live-action remakes remains uncertain. While it is unlikely that Disney will entirely abandon the genre, the financial disappointment of one of their flagship properties could lead to a reevaluation of their approach. This could result in a shift towards more direct-to-Disney+ releases, as seen with movies like Pinocchio and Peter Pan and Wendy. The repercussions of The Little Mermaid’s underperformance will undoubtedly influence Disney’s future decisions in this regard.
