After receiving a pre-race grid penalty, Max Verstappen was relieved to finish second in the Qatar Grand Prix.
After starting from seventh on the grid, Max Verstappen was pleased to finish second in the Qatar Grand Prix.
After qualifying in second place, the Red Bull driver was penalized five positions on the grid before the race for failing to slow down enough for yellow flags at the end of Q3.
Verstappen had a great start to the race, clearing three cars by the time the field surged out of Turn 1, then picked off AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso to move up to second.
Verstappen then did his best to move closer to title rival Lewis Hamilton in the lead, but he was never able to do so.
“Our starting position was a bit compromised but, luckily, we had a really good start and I was quite quickly back into second,” he explained afterwards.
Verstappen’s fastest lap point ensured that Hamilton was only six points behind him in the Drivers’ Championship – a potentially crucial two-point difference in the title race.
“At the end of it to get that fastest lap was very nice,” he commented.
“I know it’s going to be difficult to the end, but that keeps it exciting!”
