Two Shonen Jump manga offer a glimpse into the future of shonen fights

Posted on June 5, 2023June 4, 2023 by CharlotteM

“Jujutsu Kaisen and Sakamoto Days showcase the future of Shonen Jump battles, setting a new standard for other series to follow. Both manga, created by Gege Akutami and Yuto Suzuki respectively, have pushed the boundaries of traditional shonen fights with their innovative approaches. Jujutsu Kaisen introduces unique powers and intense action, while Sakamoto Days adopts a John Wick-style action-packed narrative. Despite their differences, both manga share a common vision for the future of shonen fights.

In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter #224, the epic showdown between Gojo and Sukuna captivates readers. Notably, the fight unfolds without excessive dialogue between the combatants. Similarly, Sakamoto Days chapter #120 features a breathtaking fight between Sakamoto and the assassin Slur, conveyed with impressive choreography and no words exchanged. These wordless battles redefine the shonen genre and offer a refreshing and innovative approach to storytelling.

Traditionally, shonen fights are accompanied by extensive dialogue, explaining complex abilities and character emotions. Series like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Hunter x Hunter exemplify this style, often requiring explanations to comprehend the intricate mechanics of battles. However, Jujutsu Kaisen and Sakamoto Days break away from this narrative approach, allowing the fights to speak for themselves.

Despite the absence of words, these fights convey powerful emotions. In Gojo and Sukuna’s clash, the devastating blows only fuel their excitement, evident through their gleeful expressions. Conversely, Sakamoto’s fight against Slur becomes a brutal expression of grief and vengeance over the death of his friend Akao. The facial expressions and fight choreography effectively communicate the intensity and narrative depth in each chapter.

Jujutsu Kaisen and Sakamoto Days set an example for other Shonen Jump manga to learn from. While achieving wordless fights is challenging, it is a testament to the mastery of fight choreography. As more new manga take inspiration from these series, it is likely that wordless battles will become the standard to strive for, transforming the way shonen fights are depicted and enhancing the overall storytelling experience.”
