Twitter debates Nezuko’s adult form in Demon Slayer

Posted on May 5, 2023May 5, 2023 by CharlotteM

The popular anime series, Demon Slayer, has been making headlines recently due to the discussions sparked by Nezuko Kamado’s adult form. Nezuko is one of the main characters in the series and is known for her strength and unique abilities. In her evolved state, Nezuko’s power increases significantly, and her physical appearance matures to that of a fully grown woman.

The ongoing Swordsmith Village Arc of Demon Slayer is currently captivating viewers. In this arc, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Genya, and mist hashira stand together against the demons attacking the village. However, in one of the fights, Tanjiro and Nezuko get separated. Tanjiro asks Nezuko to protect Genya, who is in a terrible state. In order to become stronger, Nezuko increases her size and turns into a full-grown woman to fight the demons.

However, the portrayal of Nezuko’s adult form has raised concerns among fans. Some Twitter users have criticized the depiction of a 14-year-old character in her adult form. They argue that such a portrayal is inappropriate and raises questions about the responsible representation of teenage characters in anime and manga.

This is not the first time Nezuko’s adult form has sparked controversy. During the Entertainment District Arc, which aired before the Swordsmith Village Arc, Nezuko also transformed into a full-grown woman to utilize her full power. Fans were divided on the portrayal, with some defending it as a necessary part of the story, while others found it uncomfortable and inappropriate.

One fan even pointed out that Daki, one of the antagonists from the Entertainment District Arc, was also 13 years old, the same age as Nezuko, yet was depicted as a fully grown woman. This has led to further discussions about the portrayal of young characters in anime and manga and the need for responsible representation.

Despite the controversy, many fans of the series have come to Nezuko’s defense, arguing that there is nothing wrong with the adult form of Nezuko and that it is an essential part of her character development.

For those who have not yet watched the Demon Slayer anime series, it is available on Crunchyroll and other streaming platforms. The series is based on the manga of the same name, written and drawn by Koyoharu Gotouge, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020. The anime adaptation, produced by Studio Ufotable, has received widespread critical acclaim for its engaging narrative, distinctive art style, and well-developed characters, earning numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2020.
