Former Jujutsu Kaisen manga translator Stefan Koza (35) has been sentenced by the Fairfax County Circuit Court of Virginia. On April 28, Koza received a guilty verdict for eight counts of possession of child pornography, resulting in a 10-year jail sentence for each count, to be served concurrently. However, the court also imposed a partially suspended sentence, suspending seven years of the sentence on each count for five years.
During the five-year suspended sentence, Koza will be on supervised probation and required to undergo mental health counseling and sex offender treatment. He will be prohibited from using devices with internet access, as well as having access to cameras or visual recording devices. Koza is responsible for covering all costs related to the case and must register himself in the sex offender registry for the state of Virginia.
Although seven years of the sentence have been suspended, Koza will still serve three years in jail. Any time already spent in jail will be credited towards the remaining three-year sentence. The Fairfax County Circuit Court did not provide information on the exact amount of time Koza has already served or the duration left to serve.
Update on May 25: The Virginia Department of Corrections denied a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from ANN for information regarding Koza’s time served and remaining sentence, citing an exemption related to the disclosure of records of persons imprisoned in penal institutions.
Koza’s charges stem from a grand jury indictment in Fairfax County in December 2021, which included eight felony counts of possession of child pornography. The case initially passed through the Fairfax County General District Court before moving to the Fairfax County Circuit Court.
In December 2020, Koza was arrested by the Herndon Police Department in Virginia on suspicion of possession and distribution of child pornography. The arrest was made in collaboration with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Taskforce. Initially charged with five counts of possession and distribution of child pornography, Koza was later released on recognizance but had to adhere to certain conditions, such as avoiding contact with minors and abstaining from internet use.
In a separate incident in Japan in 2014, Koza was arrested for trespassing and secretly recording in an elementary school’s girls’ dressing room. He denied the charges at the time and reportedly received three years of probation before being removed from Japan and returning to the United States.
Koza worked as an English-language translator for various Shonen Jump manga titles, including Jujutsu Kaisen, Ghost Reaper Girl, We Never Learn, and Tokyo Shinobi Squad. He was employed as a freelance manga translator for Viz Media from January 2018 onwards, but the company confirmed that they did not continue working with Koza following his arrest.
