Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 2 challenge Pixar’s commitment, but it was bound to happen

Posted on October 12, 2023 by CharlotteM

The anticipated releases of Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 2 have stirred conversations among Pixar fans, raising questions about the animation studio’s commitment to original content versus the allure of revisiting beloved franchises. While Pixar had made a noteworthy promise to prioritize original storytelling in the wake of Toy Story 4, the advent of these two sequels suggests a potential shift in their strategy. This deviation, however, was arguably inevitable given the factors at play.

Inside Out 2 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, offering a new adventure in the realm of Riley’s emotions. On the other hand, Toy Story 5 marks the fifth installment in a franchise that appeared to conclude poignantly with Toy Story 4. The latter decision might have surprised many, as Toy Story 4 concluded with a heartfelt farewell from Woody and Buzz Lightyear. The return of the franchise suggests that there are more tales to be woven within the world of these beloved toys.

Pixar’s initial declaration of focusing on original content indeed materialized with films like Onward and Soul, both of which were welcomed with critical acclaim. Soul, in particular, was celebrated for its deep themes and unique storytelling. Pixar continued on this original content trajectory with plans for Elemental in 2023. Still, the studio’s recent announcement of Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 2 hints at a rekindled interest in revisiting established franchises, a practice that led to their initial prominence.

Yet, the shift back to sequels can be viewed as a pragmatic move. Sequels of popular franchises come with built-in audiences and box office success, making them a safe bet for studios. The decision to develop Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 2 might have been partly influenced by the performance of Pixar’s recent original content. If their original content didn’t fare as well as anticipated, returning to established franchises was a logical choice.

However, this return to sequels shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a rejection of original content. Instead, it might signify a balance. By producing sequels alongside original content, Pixar can tap into the proven success of established franchises while continuing to explore new and innovative stories. This could potentially benefit original animations as well, as the financial stability of sequels might provide more creative freedom for their original projects.

While Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 2 might mark the start of a sequel-oriented phase for Pixar, the studio’s future direction remains open-ended. They could very well pivot back to their original content commitment in the future. The undeniable appeal of sequels is merely a part of the larger picture, with Pixar continuing to navigate the delicate balance between revisiting past successes and breaking new ground in the world of animation.
