In The Good Dinosaur, a young dinosaur becomes lost in the forest and must find his way home with only a dog-like boy for company. Pixar’s technical animation skills shine from the start, but the cartoon dinosaurs in this film don’t quite match their usual standard. It’s a sweet and funny adventure with heart but lacks the sophistication of some other Pixar films like Inside Out.
The film’s premise is a bit confused, possibly due to a rushed production after a last-minute rethink. In this world, dinosaurs never went extinct and have evolved over millions of years, but this concept isn’t explored in depth. The story focuses on a family of Apatosauruses who are farmers, but their progress over the millennia seems limited. They can talk, like most cartoon animals.
In this family, three kids are born, two strong and energetic, and one small and timid named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa). Arlo wants to be brave but is scared of everything. His father assigns him the task of dealing with a “critter” that’s been eating their crops, but Arlo fails. This decision leads to a series of events that result in him getting lost far from home. His only companion on the journey back is the critter, Spot (Jack Bright), a human evolved into something like a Labrador.
The plot is straightforward, lacking sub-plots or many supporting characters, except for some cowboy T-Rexes and a peculiar hermit. While the journey aspect feels underdeveloped, director Peter Sohn succeeds in portraying the heartfelt bond between Arlo and Spot. This connection remains authentic throughout the film. Despite some signs of a rushed production, especially in the storytelling, the film’s central duo brings enough heart to overshadow its shortcomings.
Although the film’s backdrop and environment design are beautifully detailed, the story itself is relatively familiar and safe, missing the opportunity to match the visual excellence.
