Oshi No Ko, a manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari, has become a sensational hit, surpassing even the likes of Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece in manga sales. In May, it claimed the number one position in Oricon’s top 20 best-selling manga rankings, outselling other popular titles by a significant margin.
According to Oricon’s rankings, Oshi No Ko sold approximately 820,912 copies in May alone, leaving acclaimed manga series such as Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and One Piece far behind in terms of sales. Chainsaw Man secured the 12th spot with 155,147 copies sold, while Jujutsu Kaisen followed closely at the 13th spot with 153,104 copies sold. One Piece, a manga juggernaut, occupied the 17th spot with 140,839 copies sold. Although these sales figures are impressive, they pale in comparison to Oshi No Ko’s astounding success.
The closest competitor to Oshi No Ko in terms of sales is Blue Lock, a sports manga published by Kodansha, which sold 731,107 copies in May and claimed the second spot on the list. However, even with such strong numbers, Blue Lock falls short by nearly 90,000 copies compared to Oshi No Ko.
By June 2023, the manga series is expected to have over 9 million copies in circulation, compiled in 11 tankÅbon volumes. Fans can enjoy reading the manga on Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform, with new chapters released weekly in Weekly Young Jump. Yen Press has also licensed the series for release in North America.
In April 2023, an anime adaptation of Oshi No Ko premiered, becoming the most successful debut in the history of the streaming service Hidive. The story, centered around Ai Hoshino and her twin children, Aquamarine Hoshino and Ruby Hoshino, resonated with fans worldwide. The anime’s popularity further fueled manga sales as fans eagerly followed the journey of Aquamarine and Ruby navigating the dark side of the entertainment industry.
Oshi No Ko’s success lies in its unique blend of isekai elements and real-world themes, captivating a global audience. The series sheds light on the darker aspects of the idol industry while incorporating reincarnation tropes commonly found in isekai stories. With its compelling narrative and record-breaking manga sales, Oshi No Ko has emerged as a frontrunner among new anime titles, giving established shows like Chainsaw Man and Blue Lock a run for their money.
