“When it comes to working with a character as iconic and influential as Mickey Mouse, there’s a rich history to consider. However, according to AJ Grand-Scrutton, the creative director of Disney Illusion Island and CEO of Diala Studios, Disney was open to their ideas for a cooperative “Metroidvania”-style game. During an interview with Kotaku at Summer Game Fest, Grand-Scrutton mentioned that he faced no opposition during the development process.
Disney Illusion Island takes players on an adventure with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy in the world of Monoth. The game features a combatless, cooperative side-scrolling experience with elements of backtracking and ability unlocks akin to the Metroidvania genre. Drawing inspiration from games like Rayman Legends and Ori and the Blind Forest, the developers aimed to create tight platforming mechanics and stunning animations reminiscent of Mickey’s modern animated series, The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.
While Disney Illusion Island is not directly tied to any specific era of Mickey Mouse cartoons, Grand-Scrutton mentioned that both the game and the show share common influences. He expressed a fondness for the classic Mickey Mouse of the ’30s and ’40s and explained how the game’s characters and aesthetics reflect those inspirations.
Creating a game that pays homage to Mickey Mouse’s extensive legacy while establishing its own identity presents a challenge. Working with a corporation as large as Disney might raise concerns about preserving the characters’ essence. However, Grand-Scrutton mentioned that Disney provided valuable guidance and was receptive to the team’s creative decisions, as long as they could articulate their reasoning.
Maintaining authenticity and capturing the characters’ essence extended beyond visual design. Each character in Disney Illusion Island possesses equal running and jumping capabilities, with different visual elements distinguishing them. This approach ensures that players can choose their favorite character without feeling disadvantaged. Grand-Scrutton described how each character was given a toy analogy, shaping their animations and unique feel.
Disney Illusion Island aims to be accessible to younger audiences while offering mechanical depth for Metroidvania enthusiasts. The game incorporates various accessibility options, such as color settings, jump assist, and infinite health, catering to players with disabilities and accommodating less experienced or younger players.
Diala Studios’ decision to design for families rather than exclusively targeting children aligns with Disney’s reputation as an “all-ages” company. While combat is a common element in the Metroidvania genre, Disney Illusion Island initially considered including it but ultimately chose to focus on seamless platforming and the joy of movement. The absence of combat allows players to fully immerse themselves in the cooperative multiplayer experience.
Mickey Mouse’s versatility and enduring appeal stem from his embodiment of joy and childhood optimism. His timeless character has undergone various interpretations throughout the years, yet he remains recognizable and beloved. Grand-Scrutton expressed his admiration for Mickey’s malleability and engaging qualities.
As for Daisy Duck, the iconic fashionista and beloved character, she is not playable in Disney Illusion Island. Grand-Scrutton did not provide specific details about Daisy’s absence in the game.”
