“Disney Faces Significant Financial Losses in 2022 Due to Lightyear and Strange World”
The year 2022 proved to be a challenging one for Disney, as the entertainment giant encountered substantial financial setbacks primarily attributed to the underperformance of two major productions: Lightyear and Strange World. These high-budget films failed to live up to expectations, resulting in significant losses for the company.
Strange World, an animated family adventure film that ventured into fantastical realms inhabited by a diverse array of surreal lifeforms, received praise from both audiences and critics. Despite its positive reception, the film struggled to make a substantial impact at the box office. While it managed to generate total revenues of $165 million, the production costs alone amounted to a hefty $180 million. When factoring in additional expenses such as advertising and global distribution, the film’s total expenditures soared to over $317 million. Consequently, Strange World found itself burdened with a staggering net loss exceeding $152 million.
Lightyear, on the other hand, marked a significant departure from the beloved Toy Story franchise. The film aimed to tell the “real” story of Buzz Lightyear, with the iconic character voiced by Chris Evans. Pixar’s decision to explore a more science fiction-oriented narrative created a divergence in audience expectations. Pete Docter, an executive at Pixar, noted that fans were accustomed to the traditional Toy Story ensemble, and Lightyear’s departure from this formula left some viewers perplexed. Despite its promising start with a debut gross of $51 million, the film’s subsequent performance disappointed as it generated only $267 million worldwide against its substantial $373 million expense total. Lightyear contributed to Disney’s overall net loss of $106 million.
These financial setbacks have raised questions about Disney’s ability to compete with other animation studios in the ever-evolving landscape of family-friendly entertainment. While Disney Animation Studios and Pixar take their time between sequels, this deliberate approach allows for the creation of new intellectual properties (IPs) and the release of sequels to well-established and successful films. A Disney representative emphasized the company’s commitment to cultivating new IPs and highlighted past triumphs like Frozen, Cars, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, and Finding Dory. These films started as new IPs and went on to become some of the highest-grossing and most beloved franchises under the Disney umbrella.
