Jett Lawrence of Team Honda HRC won the Dave Coombs Sr. 250SX East/West Showdown, a unique combined-class finale for the 250SX Class divisions; right behind him at the finish, Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Colt Nichols took the Eastern Regional 250SX Class title, and Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Justin Cooper took the Western Regional 250SX Class title.
When the gates were opened for the Dave Coombs Sr. 250SX East/West Showdown, Colt Nichols, the Eastern Regional 250SX Class red plate holder, took the early lead, followed by Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Seth Hammaker and Jett Lawrence. Hunter Lawrence of Team Honda HRC finished fourth, while Western Regional 250SX Class points leader Justin Cooper finished fifth. Nichols just needed to finish in the top 20 to win, while Cooper only needed to finish in the top 17 to win. Cooper appeared to consider his track position, play the points, and ride conservatively, whereas Nichols appeared determined to win the race.
Cooper had dropped to ninth place in the 15-minute plus one lap event before four minutes had passed. Jett Lawrence and Hammaker battled it out for second place up front, with Lawrence coming out on top. Hunter Lawrence was trying to pass Hammaker less than a minute later when he washed out in a tight right-hand corner; he immediately remounted, but the mistake put him to fifth place.
Cameron McAdoo of Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki moved into third place in the last minutes, while Jett Lawrence erased Nichols’ lead a little farther up the track. One lap later, Jett Lawrence flew through the whoops to take the lead, and on the final lap, Hunter Lawrence passed McAdoo to take third.
The race resulted in the crown of two champions, the first for the Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha team, and the appearance of two brothers on the podium. Nichols’ 2021 exploits also include finishing on the podium at every round, a feat not accomplished since 2015, when Marvin Musquin dominated the 250SX Class with the same consistency.
