Is Zohakuten’s design in Demon Slayer a copy of Eneru from One Piece? Let’s find out

Posted on May 23, 2023May 23, 2023 by CharlotteM

With the recent release of the latest anime episode of Demon Slayer, fans were introduced to the formidable form of Hantengu known as Zohakuten. This fearsome transformation showcases a uniquely terrifying design, representing the culmination of Hantengu’s four clones merging together, embodying the intense hatred that fuels the core human emotion of disgust.

As fans of Demon Slayer continue to explore Zohakuten’s design, some have noticed striking similarities between this character and a certain figure from One Piece. Interestingly enough, both characters share lightning-based powers and project an air of superiority, existing as beings beyond the realm of ordinary humans.

While some One Piece fans are quick to accuse Zohakuten’s design of being a mere copy of Eneru, the antagonist from the Skypiea arc, a closer examination reveals significant differences between the two designs. Furthermore, there is a compelling reason behind the resemblance between the latest Demon Slayer character and Eneru.

It is essential to note that Demon Slayer’s Zohakuten is not a direct replica of One Piece’s Eneru, but rather draws inspiration from similar sources for character design. The striking similarities in their designs present an interesting challenge in determining whether one imitated the other. However, several key differences exist between the two, some inherent and others more subtle.

One prominent distinction lies in the design of their Taiko drums. While Eneru’s drum features a tomoe pattern consisting of three symbols, Zohakuten’s drums bear the kanji character for hatred. Additionally, Zohakuten adorns a decorative tunic on his chest, in contrast to Eneru, who wears no upper body armor or clothing whatsoever.

Another minute detail that sets Demon Slayer’s Zohakuten apart from One Piece’s Eneru is the absence of a durag or bonnet-like hairpiece on Zohakuten. Instead, the demon character sports two horns, reflective of his demonic nature. This inherent distinction between a demon and a human is another factor contributing to their divergent designs.

However, certain similarities between Zohakuten and Eneru are evident. Both characters prominently feature taiko drums on their backs and wear earrings, although the designs of the earrings differ significantly. They also wear pants with decorative coverings held together by fabric belts.

Furthermore, both Zohakuten and Eneru wield weapons, albeit different ones. Eneru wields a staff-like spear, while Zohakuten’s primary weapons are two horn-like boomerangs, which he can utilize in various ways. These similarities and differences form the core distinctions between the characters.

The reason behind the striking resemblances in their inherent character designs lies in the shared inspiration from the Japanese thunder god, Raijin. Classical depictions of Raijin portray him wearing a similar lower outfit to that of both Eneru and Zohakuten, with taiko drums adorning his back.

In essence, Zohakuten’s character design cannot be considered a mere copy of Eneru’s. Instead, it draws inspiration from the same source, namely the thunder god Raijin. Both Demon Slayer’s Zohakuten and One Piece’s Eneru pay homage to this iconic deity, resulting in similar design elements rooted in Japanese mythology.
