“Frozen 3 is officially in the works at Disney, but there has been a significant change behind the scenes compared to the first two films.
Jennifer Lee, who co-wrote and co-directed the initial two movies, confirmed in June 2023 that she won’t be directing the third installment and may not be involved in the writing process either.
Lee explained, “The direction we’re taking with Frozen didn’t come from me. It came from an amazing individual… I’ve been incredibly impressed by it and I’m thoroughly enjoying working with that team.”
It’s possible that Lee might still contribute to the writing of Frozen 3, considering her role as the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. While the new filmmaker’s identity remains unknown, here’s a comprehensive overview of Frozen 3’s details. Frozen 3 anticipated release date: When can we expect it? Although Frozen 3 has been confirmed, the exact release date remains uncertain. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced the new film in February 2023, but no information about the movie’s development stage was shared.
Given that there was a six-year gap between Frozen and Frozen 2, this might serve as a rough estimate for the release of Frozen 3. Fans might need to wait until around 2025 for Anna and Elsa’s return.
As soon as more details emerge, we will update this information. Returning cast for Frozen 3: Who’s coming back? Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Josh Gad as Olaf, and Jonathan Groff as Kristoff (and Sven) are expected to reprise their roles. While Disney hasn’t officially confirmed this, Menzel hinted that the original cast members will return, even though she hasn’t received any details about the movie.
Menzel mentioned in an interview with Billboard in June 2023, “Honestly, they teased it to us, and I have no idea. They don’t show you a script. They don’t show you anything. All I know is, yeah, we are gonna make one, and that’s it.”
Additionally, returning characters could include Sterling K. Brown as Mattias, Jason Ritter as Northuldra member Ryder, Rachel Matthews as Ryder’s sister Honeymaren, and CiarĂ¡n Hinds as Rock Trolls leader Pabbie. Following flashbacks in Frozen 2, Evan Rachel Wood and Alfred Molina might reappear as Anna and Elsa’s parents, Iduna and Agnarr. Plot of Frozen 3: Building on Frozen 2’s conclusion In the sequel, Anna and Elsa journey to the enchanted forest outside Arendelle to uncover the source of a mysterious voice that has been calling to Elsa. Their goal is to prevent the enchanted spirits from causing harm to Arendelle.
The story delves into the past, revealing a conflict between Arendelle soldiers and the Northuldra people living in the forest. This conflict led to the forest being sealed off from the outside world. It’s discovered that Anna and Elsa’s parents were headed to Ahtohallan to understand Elsa’s powers when they were shipwrecked. The sisters learn their mother was Northuldran.
Further revelations show that their grandfather caused the conflict and built a dam in the forest to weaken the Northuldra. To make amends, Anna realizes she must destroy the dam to free the forest.
With Elsa frozen in Ahtohallan while seeking the voice (which is revealed to be a memory of her mother), she becomes the “fifth spirit,” bridging the magical and human worlds. Anna becomes Queen of Arendelle, concluding the storylines established in Frozen.
While the direction of the third film remains unknown, Josh Gad has mentioned that a third movie would only be considered if there’s a meaningful reason for its existence, similar to the sequel’s rationale.
Gad stated, “I don’t know if and when there will be a Frozen 3. That’s way above my pay grade. If there’s always a story worth telling, I’m sure that Jennifer Lee and the incredible team over at Disney animation will tell that story one day.”
We can only hope that such a story has been found.”
