If you’re a fan of the popular manga and anime series Hunter x Hunter, you may be wondering when the manga will be returning from its latest hiatus, and why it goes on hiatus so often. Fortunately, we’ve compiled all the information you need to know in this guide.
First, the good news: while the manga was forced to go on hiatus once again in December 2022, it is expected to return soon. The series’ author, Yoshihiro Togashi, has confirmed that he has completed and continues to work on upcoming chapters related to the Dark Continent Expedition arc. Togashi confirmed this through a public Twitter account, and he has continued to provide updates on the series’ progress through said account since. His most recent post showed that he had completed Chapter 401, and that he was improving on the production process for new chapters little by little.
Typically, new Hunter x Hunter chapters release legally on Sundays around 11 a.m. EST, though the exact release date for Chapter 401 has yet to be determined. The chapters are currently available to read through Shonen Jump’s digital outlets, and they’ll be available to read through print volumes at a later date.
Speaking of print volumes, the most recent volume, Volume 37, was released in Japan on November 4, 2022. The volume compiled chapters 381-390, covering some of the available material that hadn’t yet been put into a tankÅbon. There are enough chapters to create another volume at this point, but it hasn’t yet been revealed when such a volume would be released.
For English-speaking fans, Volume 37 of Hunter x Hunter is set to release in English on October 3, 2023. It will be available through both brick and mortar book stores and digital shopping outlets like Amazon or Right Stuf.
Now, for the unfortunate news: it’s quite likely that the series will go on hiatus again before long, and the reason for this is rather unfortunate. After launching his Twitter account and providing insight into the state of the Hunter x Hunter series, Togashi also revealed that the main contributing factor to its many hiatuses is his continued health issues.
Most of these issues are related to his back, and they have greatly limited how much he can work or even function on a day-to-day basis. As a result, the continuation of the series can and will be subject to Togashi’s physical needs and well-being.
This is a common occurrence in the manga industry and among authors who contribute to Shonen Jump. Several have had to take extended breaks from creating new chapters for their series due to persistent health issues, and some series have had to fold entirely due to the author no longer being physically capable of completing them.
As such, it’s a blessing that Togashi is still able to produce anything at all for the series. With this in mind, it’s important to approach the delayed release of new chapters with patience, as well as the understanding that Togashi may need to leave the series unfinished for his own well-being.
