Amidst a wave of layoffs at the Walt Disney Company, Pixar also saw significant job cuts, including the departure of director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman from the studio’s ranks. Angus MacLane, a seasoned animator with 26 years of experience, had been an integral part of Pixar’s Senior Creative Team, contributing to the success of animated hits like Coco, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4. His departure from the studio occurred in late May as part of Disney’s broader workforce reduction plan, which aimed to eliminate around 7,000 positions. Galyn Susman, whose association with Pixar dates back to the original Toy Story’s release in 1995, also found herself among those impacted by these cuts.
The layoffs at Pixar on May 23 resulted in a total of 75 job redundancies, an occurrence that is relatively unusual for the animation studio. The last time Pixar experienced significant layoffs was in 2013, primarily due to the delay of the film “The Good Dinosaur.” Back then, approximately 5% of Pixar’s 1,200-strong workforce was affected, including director Bob Peterson.
Angus MacLane and Galyn Susman’s departures were especially notable because they were part of the creative team behind “Lightyear,” a spinoff movie from the Toy Story franchise. “Lightyear” centered around the astronaut whose adventures inspired the iconic Buzz Lightyear toy, with Chris Evans lending his voice to the titular character. Despite a reported budget of $200 million, the film’s box office performance fell below expectations, with global earnings amounting to $226.7 million. Several controversies marred its release, including the decision not to include Tim Allen, the original voice of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, and the depiction of a same-sex couple, which led some Middle Eastern and Asian countries to refrain from exhibiting the film.
While Disney completed its round of layoffs in the United States, the company is now shifting its focus to international operations, considering further staff reductions on a global scale. These developments mark a significant period of change and restructuring within the entertainment giant’s workforce.
