At a recent graduation ceremony at the Culinary Institute of America, a Ratatouille fan humorously hinted that perhaps she wasn’t the most deserving graduate.
Ratatouille, an unconventional Pixar film released in 2007, features the story of Remy the Rat, voiced by Patton Oswalt, who aspires to become a chef, often inspired by the image of Chef Auguste Gusteau, portrayed by Brad Garrett. Despite his culinary dreams, Remy’s family believes he should stick to scavenging like the rest of them.
Remy’s life takes a dramatic turn when he sneaks into Chef Gusteau’s restaurant and forms an unusual partnership with Linguine, a garbage boy. Remy’s unique ability to control Linguine’s movements through his hair sets them on a quest to become renowned chefs in Paris, all while avoiding the watchful eye of Head Chef Skinner, played by Ian Holm, and a formidable food critic named Anton Ego, portrayed by Peter O’Toole.
Directed by Brad Bird, the film has seen a resurgence in popularity, with the opening of the ride “Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure” at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT in 2021, the creation of an unofficial musical called “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” or “Ratatousical” in 2020, and even a parody subplot featuring a raccoon named Raccacoonie controlling a teppanyaki chef in “Everything Everywhere All At Once” (2022).
The most recent tribute to Brad Bird’s beloved animated film took place at a culinary school graduation.
During the Culinary Institute of America’s graduation ceremony, aspiring chefs donned their traditional white coats and tall hats to receive their diplomas. However, one graduate had a surprise hidden beneath her hat: Remy the Rat, the main character of Ratatouille, wearing a small cap of his own.
The heartwarming moment was captured on video by TikTok user WazzardOz, the graduate’s sister. The crocheted Remy headpiece was undeniably adorable and received overwhelmingly positive reactions from viewers. Comments poured in, with viewers calling the tribute iconic, cute, amazing, adorable, and the best thing ever. One viewer humorously suggested, “It was Remy the entire time?! It should be his name on that diploma!” Another commenter added, “He needs his own little medal and diploma to match!”
Whether the credit goes to WazzardOz’s sister or Remy himself, congratulations are certainly in order for this memorable and creative graduation tribute.
