In the world of Star Wars, the character of Grand Admiral Thrawn has been a source of fascination and intrigue for fans ever since his debut in Timothy Zahn’s “Heir to the Empire” trilogy over three decades ago. Even after Disney’s declaration that much of the Star Wars Expanded Universe was no longer considered canon, Thrawn not only survived but thrived, making appearances in the animated series “Star Wars: Rebels,” where he was voiced by the talented Lars Mikkelsen. Now, as we eagerly anticipate his live-action debut in the upcoming series “Ahsoka,” showrunner Dave Filoni sheds light on why Lars Mikkelsen was the natural choice for this iconic role.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight at Star Wars Celebration in April, Dave Filoni opened up about the process of selecting Lars Mikkelsen to portray Thrawn in “Ahsoka.” Filoni revealed, “It was a very considered decision… It was a very big challenge to cast the voice. You know, how do you find a voice for a character that everybody who has read it, pictured it probably in a different, unique way? Eventually, that led me to Lars, and we were all very happy with his performance in Rebels. [Jon Favreau said] ‘It’s going to be very hard to beat Lars.’ Because Lars is in my head. The sound of his voice is kind of what I write to.”
While Filoni explored other options for the live-action Thrawn, he found himself continually drawn back to Lars Mikkelsen. This sentiment was echoed by Jon Favreau, and together, they made the decision to cast Mikkelsen in the role. Filoni expressed his satisfaction with the choice, stating, “I couldn’t be happier. He looks wonderful in blue. Not everybody does, so that’s a factor, and we worked on the eyes so… it’s a unique thing to bring this character to life.”
However, transitioning from voice acting to live-action is not always seamless, even for a seasoned actor like Lars Mikkelsen. He mentioned that he had to make a few adjustments to his iconic Thrawn voice, explaining, “I’m not losing the voice, but I am tweaking it into live-action. When you do an animated character, there’s a whole melodious approach. When you’re there as a real person, that would be just slightly too much.”
With the recent cliffhanger ending of the latest Ahsoka episode, fans are buzzing with anticipation about Thrawn’s potential live-action debut. As the first five episodes of “Ahsoka” are currently available for streaming on Disney+, viewers can’t wait to witness how Lars Mikkelsen brings this beloved character to life on the small screen.
