Actress Files Lawsuit Against Disney, Criticizes Company for Live-Action Remake

Posted on August 29, 2023 by CharlotteM

“The Walt Disney Company finds itself entangled in legal woes once again, this time stemming from its fervent foray into live-action remakes. While the company has garnered substantial attention for its adaptation endeavors, it has also attracted its fair share of criticism. Now, these criticisms have evolved into legal action, as Disney faces a lawsuit over one of its live-action remakes.

At the epicenter of this legal turmoil stands Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, who has found himself the target of mounting backlash in recent months. The ire directed at him primarily emanates from actors and actresses who have openly voiced their disagreement with his stance during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that have sent ripples through Hollywood. Yet, this controversy isn’t the sole tempest Disney is weathering.

Amid the tumult surrounding labor disputes, Disney has also found itself under fire from fans and critics alike on multiple fronts. Among these contentious issues, the live-action remakes have sparked considerable debate. With a slew of such adaptations already in motion and numerous others announced for the future, including the recently debuted The Little Mermaid (2023), the company’s artistic direction has drawn both excitement and reproach.

However, the company’s challenges extend beyond public discourse and into the legal realm. The latest imbroglio involves a lawsuit filed by an actress named Joanne Tremain, who had an unfortunate encounter during the filming of Cruella, one of Disney’s live-action ventures. The incident in question revolves around a distressing mishap that befell Tremain, an extra on set, due to an ill-fitting wardrobe that resulted in her slipping and sustaining substantial injuries.

The details of the incident paint a distressing picture. While participating in a ballroom scene alongside lead actress Emma Stone at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, Tremain’s aspirations of contributing to Disney’s magical narrative were marred by a wardrobe malfunction. Forced to wear heeled shoes that were ill-suited for her, Tremain’s unintentional fall led to severe consequences, including the dislocation of her kneecap. The aftermath of the fall was a series of medical procedures and intensive treatments that have left her leg irrevocably scarred and altered.

Tremain’s journey toward realizing her dream of becoming an actress has been derailed by the accident. Her efforts to recover from the dislocated kneecap and subsequent surgery have been painstaking and arduous. What was supposed to be a stepping stone in her acting career turned into a stumbling block, raising questions about the responsibilities and accountability of the production company.

In light of what she perceives as a lack of empathy and accountability on Disney’s part, Tremain has taken the step of initiating legal proceedings against the entertainment behemoth. Her legal action seeks not only compensation for the physical and emotional toll she endured but also to shed light on what she views as a systemic issue within the company’s approach to safety and support for its performers.

However, Disney’s response has been a staunch denial of Tremain’s claims. The company has gone so far as to assert the absence of any recorded footage of the incident. This denial has only compounded Tremain’s distress, further cementing her belief in the need to hold the company accountable for its actions, or lack thereof.

The repercussions of the incident have left Tremain grappling with lingering physical pain and challenges. The multiple dislocations of her knee and the subsequent reconstructive surgery have resulted in a diminished quality of life, characterized by swelling, discomfort, and difficulty with mobility. Her aspirations of a burgeoning acting career now exist in limbo, overshadowed by the specter of a fateful wardrobe malfunction.

As the legal battle ensues, questions arise not only about the veracity of Tremain’s claims but also about the broader issues of workplace safety, accountability, and the responsibility that entertainment giants like Disney bear toward their performers. The outcome of this lawsuit could potentially set a precedent for the industry at large, highlighting the need for transparency, support, and the safeguarding of performers’ well-being in the pursuit of creative excellence.”
