The latest episode of Attack on Titan – The Final Season, called The Final Chapters: Special 1, finally sheds light on a major plot hole that had been bugging fans for a while. In the previous episodes, Eren Yaeger, the protagonist of the series, transformed into the Founding Titan and started the Rumbling, a devastating attack that used the horde of Colossal Titans hidden in the Walls of Paradis Island to destroy the country of Marley and the rest of the world. His few remaining friends gathered their forces to stop him and hopefully save the world. However, the show never explained why Eren, who has the power to control the minds of all Eldians, did not use his abilities to control the minds of all the people from Paradis Island who opposed his plan of using the Rumbling to destroy the world.
In The Final Chapters: Special 1, the show finally addresses this plot hole by having Eren explain his decision to leave his friends free to oppose him. According to Eren, he refuses to use his powers to control the minds of his friends because he believes in the concept of freedom, which is central to Attack on Titan. Having grown up in the confined world of Shinganshina District, constantly surrounded by the high walls that kept the Titans away, Eren’s true dream is to gain freedom for himself and the Eldians. He comes to the conclusion that the only way to do that is by using the Rumbling to annihilate all the enemies of Paradis. “In order to obtain freedom, I will take freedom from the world”, he says in this episode. However, he also adds that he will not take anything from his friends because this would be depriving them of the same freedom he wants to give.
Eren’s decision to leave his friends free to oppose him also comes from his knowledge of the future, granted by the powers of the Attack Titan. Eren knows how his story will end and the part that his friends will play in it. The final dialogue between Eren and his friends shown in Attack on Titan – The Final Chapters: Special 1 is key to understanding the future developments of the story, and the anime did a very good job of explaining Eren’s motivations and the reasons behind his tragic actions.
The episode is split into two halves. The first shows the devastating effects of the Rumbling, an apocalyptic attack that uses the horde of Colossal Titans hidden in the Walls of Paradis Island to destroy the country of Marley and the rest of the world. In the second half, the small team that is trying to stop Eren is able to fix and board an airplane, but not before Hange sacrifices her life to buy them time. On the plane, the group, which includes Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Pieck, Reiner, Jean, and Connie, is pulled by Eren’s powers into a vision and transported to the Paths. There, Eren explains that their desire to reason with him is pointless, and he won’t stop the Rumbling unless they kill him. The final moments of the episode set the stage for the upcoming episodes and leave fans eagerly anticipating the next installment of Attack on Titan – The Final Season.
