Antonio Giovinazzi claims that not knowing what awaits him in 2022 makes his racing more difficult, as it would for any driver.
Giovinazzi’s seat is the final one for the 2022 grid that has still to be decided. He is in the final stages of his third season with Alfa Romeo.
Colton Herta has joined Guanyu Zhou, Oscar Piastri, and Theo Pourchaire in being linked to the team, with Michael Andretti reportedly keen in taking a majority stake.
And Giovinazzi isn’t going to pretend that the uncertainty doesn’t have an impact.
“For sure, it’s not easy. If you ask this question to all of the drivers, they will answer that it’s not easy. You want to know what you will do next year, if you’re here or not,” he told reporters at the United States Grand Prix.
Despite the fact that this year’s contenders are new, Giovinazzi acknowledged that at this point in his career, he is used to not having job security from one season to the next.
“It’s not ideal, but the situation is this now for me, and I will try to do my best as well with this pressure on me,” he said.
“But like I mentioned already many times, for me, September, October, it’s been always like this, I always had some issues with what I will do the next season, and this is happening also this year.
“The problem is not in my hands, so it’s not my decision. What I can do is just bring the results, be fast and then see what [Alfa Romeo] will decide.”
At the Turkish Grand Prix, Giovinazzi did not appear to assist his cause by ignoring Alfa Romeo’s directives to let teammate Kimi Raikkonen pass.
However, the team stated that no ill feelings remained, which Giovinazzi confirms.
“I think it’s an issue that sometimes comes, and it came already in the past. But I don’t like, to be honest, to comment on this here, I just like to discuss this with the team, inside of the team,” said Giovinazzi.
“But it’s not the first time and the important thing is we are okay now, all fine.
“I believe in my team, they believe in me, so the only thing that is [important] now is that we score points. This is what we want, all of us.”
