Disney partners with Sony to hand over DVD, Blu-ray Disc operations

Posted on February 22, 2024 by CharlotteM

Disney has entered into a strategic partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, marking a significant shift in its home entertainment division. Under this arrangement, Sony will assume responsibility for a substantial portion of Disney’s physical media operations, including the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and other tangible formats.

Specifically, Sony will take on the role of marketing, selling, and distributing all of Disney’s upcoming releases and existing catalog titles on physical media in the lucrative markets of the United States and Canada. This agreement allows Disney to focus more extensively on its digital media endeavors, such as premium video-on-demand services, while leveraging Sony’s expertise and resources in the realm of physical distribution.

The implications of this collaboration on Disney’s workforce remain uncertain. However, insiders suggest that the company will conduct a comprehensive internal assessment across all departments involved in supporting physical entertainment operations. This evaluation may lead to restructuring efforts or workforce adjustments as Disney transitions its physical media operations to Sony.

Disney asserts that adopting a licensing model with Sony will enable it to streamline its physical distribution processes and respond more effectively to consumer demand. Moreover, this strategic realignment aligns with Disney’s broader corporate strategies and reflects ongoing transitions within the entertainment industry.

The decision to outsource physical media operations comes at a time when the market for physical discs is experiencing a significant decline, primarily due to the exponential growth of streaming platforms. According to data from the Digital Entertainment Group, revenue from physical media in the United States plummeted by 28% in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous year. Projections suggest that this downward trend will continue, with 2024 expected to be the first year in which revenue falls below the billion-dollar mark.

This paradigm shift in consumer behavior has prompted major retailers to adapt their business models accordingly. Best Buy, for instance, made the decision to discontinue DVD and Blu-ray sales both in-store and online at the beginning of 2024. This move follows similar actions by industry giants such as Netflix, which terminated its DVD-by-mail service in September of the previous year.

Despite the waning popularity of physical media, select retailers like Walmart, Amazon, and Redbox continue to offer copies of popular Disney titles, catering to a segment of consumers who prefer tangible formats. These retailers recognize the enduring appeal of blockbuster releases like “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Avengers” among movie enthusiasts and collectors, ensuring continued availability of physical copies alongside digital alternatives.
