Purchasing certain peculiar Disney movies on Blu-ray is about to become more challenging

Posted on February 21, 2024 by CharlotteM

Disney’s decision to shutter the Disney Movie Club marks the end of an era for cinephiles and collectors alike, signaling a significant shift in the landscape of physical media consumption. Under a new agreement, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will assume control of Disney’s physical media production, heralding a transition that will reshape the way fans access their favorite films from the House of Mouse.

The closure of Disney Movie Club, a beloved subscription service and online store, comes as a bittersweet blow to its 10 million US users, who have relied on the platform for the past 23 years to procure Blu-rays and DVDs of cherished Disney classics, along with titles from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios. The news was delivered via email and the service’s website, with users being informed that they have until May 20th to place their final orders, before the curtains officially close on July 20th.

The Disney Movie Club, established in 2001, has been a cornerstone for Disney enthusiasts seeking access to an extensive selection of physical media, often unavailable through mainstream retail channels or digital streaming platforms. While the club’s pricing structure may have been higher than traditional outlets like Amazon or brick-and-mortar stores, its unparalleled library and exclusive perks, such as special editions and collectible merchandise, made it an indispensable resource for collectors and aficionados alike.

However, the demise of Disney Movie Club didn’t come entirely out of the blue. Recent closures of the service in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, attributed to declining membership, foreshadowed this eventuality. Despite the rise of Disney Plus in 2019, which has become the go-to streaming destination for many Disney fans, the absence of certain titles on the platform and concerns over content removal have prompted some to maintain subscriptions to both services.

The broader decline in physical media consumption, evident for over a decade and exacerbated by the proliferation of streaming services and digital rentals, has undoubtedly played a role in Disney’s strategic pivot. In 2023 alone, combined sales and rentals of physical media, including DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K Ultra HDs, plummeted by over a quarter in the US, according to estimates from the Digital Entertainment Group.

With Sony poised to take the reins of Disney’s physical media operation, questions linger about the future of the catalog and the extent to which Sony will preserve or alter Disney’s offerings. Will Sony streamline the selection, focusing on high-demand titles, or will it continue to cater to niche audiences seeking rare or vintage Disney films? The uncertainty surrounding this transition leaves many fans and collectors eagerly awaiting further details.

In the interim, Disney aficionados may turn to alternative sources such as Amazon, eBay, or specialized physical media resale sites to satiate their appetite for vintage or hard-to-find Disney gems. While the closure of Disney Movie Club marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter in the ever-evolving landscape of media consumption.
