Kathryn Newton, a recent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has shared thoughts on the prospect of joining Marvel Studios’ Young Avengers team. Newton, who portrayed the adult version of Cassie Lang in the film, expressed excitement about the character’s evolution, having previously been depicted by Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann at different stages. In Quantumania, Newton’s Cassie Lang, now suited up as Stature or Stinger, played a crucial role in the Quantum Realm alongside her father Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly).
The connection to the Young Avengers was hinted at in 2023’s The Marvels when Kamala Khan proposed building a superhero team, referencing Ant-Man’s daughter. Newton, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealed that she heard about the reference through “Quantum Realm birdies” and expressed eagerness to continue working with Marvel Studios, particularly in a Young Avengers project. She envisions Cassie growing with the audience, appealing to both existing and new Marvel fans.
Newton shared her excitement about the reference in The Marvels, stating, “I heard that there was a cool tag, and I was pretty excited to see that and hear that. In the Marvel universe, you hope for that.” Reflecting on her own Marvel journey, she drew parallels with her experience growing up alongside the character of Iron Man and expressed her desire to be part of a generation growing up with Cassie Lang’s story.
While Newton acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding the future of Cassie Lang in the MCU, she is open to the possibility of further collaborations with Marvel Studios. Despite the lack of specific details, she remains optimistic about potential opportunities, emphasizing the need to focus on one project at a time.
As Marvel Studios introduces numerous young superheroes in Phases 4 and 5, the prospect of a Young Avengers formation gains traction, with characters like Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, Riri Williams (Ironheart), America Chavez, and Skaar potentially forming the team. Although the exact release details for a Young Avengers project remain unclear, the confirmation of their presence in The Marvels hints at an exciting future for these emerging heroes. The question of whether this dynamic team will appear in a feature film or a Disney+ series is yet to be unveiled, but the anticipation for the Young Avengers’ assembly continues to grow.
