Marvel has officially announced the inaugural canon event in the MCU

Posted on January 23, 2024January 23, 2024 by CharlotteM

Marvel Studios has officially unveiled the earliest documented event in the intricate tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), shedding light on the cosmic origins that laid the foundation for the cinematic narrative we have come to know and love. This revelation comes courtesy of the book “Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline,” and it marks a significant addition to the lore of the MCU.

Entitled “The Handiwork of Celestials,” this pivotal entry delves into the enigmatic and omnipotent Celestials, the ancient beings credited with shaping the cosmos in its nascent stages. According to the book, the Celestials stand as one of the oldest and most powerful forms of life to ever exist, wielding their formidable powers to manipulate matter and energy, contributing to the construction of suns. In essence, they emerge as cosmic architects, intricately involved in the formation of the universe itself.

The narrative unfolds with the birth of Ego, a character familiar to audiences from Kurt Russell’s portrayal in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” In a departure from his Celestial brethren, Ego’s inception is described as “just a spark of consciousness alone in deep space.” This unique genesis sets the stage for his later role in the MCU as a complex and powerful entity.

The account then delves into the momentous occurrence of the Big Bang, a cosmic event that heralds the creation of the Infinity Stones. These legendary gems, each imbued with a different aspect of existence—reality, mind, soul, space, power, and time—assume a central role in the overarching narrative of the MCU.

Earth, the stage for numerous universe-shaping events, comes into existence around the same cosmic timeline. Simultaneously, Yggdrasil, the colossal cosmic collection of nine worlds and the legendary Tree of the World, takes shape. This cosmic event has far-reaching consequences, as it propels the Dark Elves into the Dark World and sets the stage for the subsequent formation of Asgard.

Intriguingly, the narrative also unveils Arishem, the Prime Celestial, as the architect of a grand plan to propagate his kind across the universe. This involves implanting Celestial eggs into planets, with Earth being chosen as the host for the egg of the Celestial Tiamut, introducing a new layer of complexity to the MCU cosmology.

However, as the Celestials seek to protect burgeoning life, they create the Deviants—a species designed to cull wild predators. Yet, this well-intentioned plan takes an unexpected turn, as the Deviants revolt against their creators, setting the stage for an enduring conflict within the MCU.

In response to this unforeseen threat, the Celestials employ the World Force to create the Eternals, sophisticated protectors with the purpose of defending creation against the Deviants. This introduces the concept of the Eternals as pivotal players in the cosmic drama unfolding in the early MCU timeline.

The narrative continues with the carving of Mount Wundagore by the demon Cthon, who embeds forbidden incantations within a temple constructed atop the mountain. This structure serves as a throne for the Scarlet Witch, prophesied to wield reality-altering powers.

The account further details the arrival of Vibranium on Earth, crashing in the form of a meteorite. The majority of this crucial metal lands in what will become Africa, shaping the continent’s destiny and setting the stage for future events.

Ego, dissatisfied with his solitude, embarks on a journey to explore the universe, leading to the infamous “Expansion” depicted in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” This underscores the complexities of character motivations within the MCU and adds depth to Ego’s storyline.

The narrative culminates with the arrival of mind-wiped Eternals on Earth in 5000 BCE. Tasked with protecting humans from the Deviants, these early MCU characters, including Ikaris and Sersi, represent a crucial juncture in the timeline, preceding the familiar heroes who would later become central figures on Earth.

As fans immerse themselves in this rich cosmic history, the narrative prompts speculation about the untapped potential within the MCU timeline. The prospect of future explorations, perhaps in an Eternals sequel or a hypothetical Thor 5, emerges as an exciting possibility. The continuity and intricacies of the MCU timeline continue to captivate audiences, promising a wealth of storytelling opportunities for Marvel Studios to explore in the evolving saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
