James Gunn’s DC Universe sidesteps the risk of excessive origin stories

Posted on January 11, 2024 by CharlotteM

James Gunn’s visionary approach to the DC Universe heralds a substantial departure from its predecessor, the DCEU, promising a refreshing take on superhero storytelling. This paradigm shift, orchestrated by Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran since their appointment in November 2022, is a deliberate effort to circumvent the pitfalls of excessive focus on individual origin stories that have been known to stifle the momentum of superhero franchises. With the inauguration of the DCU’s Chapter 1, titled ‘Gods and Monsters,’ it becomes evident that Gunn and Safran are steering the ship towards a narrative that transcends the conventional superhero template.

The sweeping changes in leadership didn’t spare even the iconic Justice League actors, as luminaries like Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck made way for a fresh roster of talent. The ensuing ten projects announced for Chapter 1 are poised to redefine the DC Universe, and ‘Superman: Legacy,’ slated for 2025 with David Corenswet in the lead role, signifies a bold new beginning. Preceding this cinematic spectacle are shows centered around the Creature Commandos and Amanda Waller, promising a multifaceted exploration of the DC mythos.

The distinguishing feature of the DCU’s blueprint lies in its strategic departure from the DCEU’s hero-centric narrative. Rather than delving exhaustively into the origin stories of its protagonists, the DCU opts for a nuanced approach that prioritizes world-building. While origin stories will undoubtedly be explored, the emphasis shifts towards introducing characters as already-established heroes, injecting a sense of immediacy into the narrative. For instance, ‘Superman: Legacy’ presents Clark Kent as an active reporter at the Daily Planet, working alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. This strategic narrative decision suggests that the film may not dwell extensively on Superman’s childhood or early superhero experiences.

This approach extends to other iconic heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman, whose worlds will be meticulously established before their individual debuts. Matt Reeves’ Arkham Asylum-set series, slated to be part of the DCU, is poised to provide a rich contextual backdrop to Gotham City. Similarly, ‘Paradise Lost’ will delve into Themyscira and the Amazons before introducing Wonder Woman, ensuring a robust foundation for her character.

The deliberate emphasis on contextualizing the wider world before diving into individual hero narratives represents a conscious effort to rectify a perceived shortcoming in the DCEU. Gunn and Safran aim to weave a tapestry of locations, events, and supporting characters, crafting a DC Universe that stands apart not only from its predecessor but also from the well-established Marvel Cinematic Universe. By addressing the critique of insufficient world-building, the DCU charts a course that is both innovative and responsive to the evolving landscape of superhero storytelling, setting the stage for a unique and immersive cinematic experience.
