Over the Hedge, initially a comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis, transitioned into a DreamWorks Animation film that deserves a second look. Reflecting on the era of Sunday newspaper comic strips, where iconic characters like Peanuts and Garfield emerged, Over the Hedge emerged as a late-stage hit in 1995. The CGI animated film, released in 2006, brought the comic to life with voices from Bruce Willis, Steve Carell, and Wanda Sykes.
SYFY WIRE is exploring the Over the Hedge universe, delving into its evolution from comic strip to movie and video games. The core characters, led by the raccoon RJ (Bruce Willis) and turtle Verne (Garry Shandling), present a comedic twist on The Odd Couple. The film introduced a broader ensemble, including Stella the skunk (Wanda Sykes) and Vincent the bear (Nick Nolte), framing a narrative of nature versus suburban life.
The film reframes the origin story, with RJ entering the suburbs to repay a debt to Vincent. The woodland creatures face human challenges, depicted as a metaphor for consumerism versus nature. The Over the Hedge comic, meanwhile, often observes humans from afar, while the movie uses the hedge as a boundary protecting the animals from human reactions.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025, Over the Hedge has spawned merchandise and comic strip compilation books. The GoComics platform archives every strip since 1995. Two video games, Over the Hedge and Hammy Goes Nuts, complement the franchise. While a sequel to the movie is absent, DreamWorks added a new short, Hammy’s Boomerang Adventure, to the home video release.
