Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has set a new low for the DCEU, receiving the franchise’s lowest audience score to date. The film’s negative publicity, fueled by controversies surrounding star Amber Heard, compounded by the revelation that it is the final DCEU movie, marks the end of an era.
The disappointing audience score, a “B” rating from CinemaScore, is the lowest in DCEU history. This places Aquaman 2 alongside The Flash and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which also received similar scores. CinemaScore ratings range from A+ to F and are determined by surveys of audiences during opening weekends.
The full DCEU CinemaScore rankings, from best to worst, are as follows: Man of Steel: A- Batman V Superman: B Suicide Squad: B+ Wonder Woman: A Justice League: B+ Aquaman: A- Shazam!: A Birds of Prey: B+ Wonder Woman 1984: B+ The Suicide Squad: B+ Black Adam: B+ Shazam! Fury of the Gods: B+ The Flash: B Blue Beetle: B+
Aquaman 2’s “B” score is comparable to The Flash and MCU’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania but falls below the “B+” ratings of Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle.
Despite a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Aquaman 2 faces criticism for its weak script, lazy exposition, and an overall lack of significance amid anticipation for James Gunn’s DCU. The negative audience score and box office projections suggest a discouraging finish for the DCEU, possibly ending on a subdued note with Aquaman 2’s underwhelming performance.
While holiday audiences might boost box office numbers, it remains uncertain if this will improve the film’s overall reception. The DCEU’s conclusion of an era could be a contributing factor to Aquaman 2’s financial and critical struggles. The film is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
