In an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, the directors of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse unveiled intriguing details about the film’s ending, particularly the unexpected Prowler twist, which turned out to be a spontaneous addition to the storyline. Originally, the plan was for Uncle Aaron to assume the role of The Prowler in the alternate dimension of Earth-42. However, a pivotal moment of inspiration struck director Kemp Powers during a Zoom meeting well into the production phase.
Powers, seized by this newfound idea, couldn’t contain his excitement and immediately shared it with his colleagues. The proposed alteration involved a significant shift – Miles Morales, the central character, would become The Prowler in Earth-42, transforming the narrative in a profound manner. Despite already having a design for the original concept, the creative team decided to go back to the drawing board and redesign the character to fit the new twist.
Describing the change as reminiscent of a “Pottersville or It’s A Wonderful Life kind of moment,” Powers emphasized that thematically, the original concept explored what would happen to Miles if he never gained superpowers. However, the revised twist involving Miles as The Prowler added a layer of emotional depth and impact that the original lacked. The initial concept portrayed Miles as Aaron’s sidekick, akin to a Robin figure, but the new twist evoked a different and more profound emotion.
Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos underscored the unanimous agreement among the directors that there was “no debate” when it came to adopting Powers’ transformative idea. The Prowler twist not only provided a compelling gut punch for the audience but also allowed the filmmakers to weave in references to The Prowler throughout the movie, creating a more cohesive and resonant narrative. With this unexpected turn, the directors have set the stage for an intriguing continuation of the story in the upcoming sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse.
