Unfulfilled Potential: 4 Green Lantern DCEU Moments and Easter Eggs that Led Nowhere

Posted on November 20, 2023 by CharlotteM

In the previous iteration of the DCEU, the Green Lantern lore was teased but never fully realized in live-action. Despite references and Easter eggs, the franchise fell short of delivering a proper Green Lantern adaptation. The vast DC Comics universe boasts iconic Green Lanterns like Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart, making it surprising that the cinematic portrayal of this iconic mythos has yet to be successful. With the DCEU transitioning into the DC Universe, the potential for a future Green Lantern project remains.

The first attempt to introduce a live-action Green Lantern was in the 2011 film of the same name, which unfortunately failed to resonate with audiences. Despite this setback, the animated series, “Green Lantern: The Animated Series,” stood out as a successful adaptation. However, plans for a live-action Green Lantern in the DCEU never materialized beyond brief appearances and Easter eggs.

  1. Yalan Gur Battled Darkseid – Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021): The only direct appearance of a Green Lantern Corps member in the DCEU occurred in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Yalan Gur, the Green Lantern assigned to Earth’s protection, valiantly fought against Darkseid’s forces but met a tragic end. Despite the potential for a follow-up storyline involving Alan Scott, who inherits Gur’s ring in the comics, the franchise did not explore this narrative.
  2. A Green Lantern Led To Jaime Reyes Becoming Blue Beetle – Blue Beetle (2023): In the prologue of “Blue Beetle,” a Green Lantern collides with the Scarab (Khaji-Da), indirectly influencing the origin of Blue Beetle. This event ties the Green Lantern Corps to the history of the Blue Beetles and the Scarab on Earth. The rivalry between the Green Lantern Corps and the Reach in the comics adds depth to this connection, but the DCEU did not delve further into this dynamic.
  3. A Man of Steel Character References Star Sapphire – Man of Steel (2013): In a subtle Easter egg, the character Carrie Farris in “Man of Steel” hints at the Green Lantern lore. Carrie Farris, with a name resembling Carol Ferris from Green Lantern comics, alludes to the iconic Star Sapphire character. However, this nod did not translate into a genuine exploration of the Star Sapphire storyline in the DCEU.
  4. Green Lantern Merchandise Appears In Shazam 2 – Shazam! Fury of the Gods (Upcoming): A noteworthy but subtle Easter egg in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is the appearance of Green Lantern merchandise in a pediatrician’s office. The existence of Green Lantern-themed toys suggests the presence of a modern Green Lantern in the DCEU, even though the character is not directly portrayed.

Additionally, the iconic Green Lantern John Stewart was set to make his debut in the finale of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, portrayed by Wayne T. Carr. However, Warner Bros. pressured Snyder to remove the scene, leaving the DCEU without a direct portrayal of a human Green Lantern.

As the DCEU transitions into the DCU, the Green Lantern lore may find new life in upcoming projects. The TV series “Lanterns,” featuring John Stewart and Hal Jordan, could potentially incorporate ideas initially intended for the DCEU’s Green Lantern Corps. While the future remains uncertain, the return of the Green Lantern to live-action adaptations is anticipated in the evolving DC Universe.
