“While Tom Cruise continued to dazzle audiences with his daring stunts in a Mission: Impossible film over the weekend, Pixar’s Elemental made its mark at the box office by showing impressive staying power. The animated romance secured a spot in the top five for its fifth consecutive weekend, accumulating a total of $125 million. Notably, this surpasses last year’s Lightyear and even 2015’s The Good Dinosaur (which was directed by Elemental’s Peter Sohn). However, it’s worth mentioning that Disney removed The Good Dinosaur prematurely from many theaters to make room for The Force Awakens showings.
Remarkably, Elemental has now become the most successful original animated film since 2017’s Coco, outperforming even 2021’s Encanto. Despite initial doubts from some in the media, Elemental, a traditional Pixar offering, has resonated well with audiences. Disney has every reason to be pleased with its performance.
In the coming weeks, Elemental will face competition from Barbie and Haunted Mansion for the family market, but both of these films are rated PG-13 and might not appeal to young children. The next animated challenger won’t arrive until Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in August.
In other box office news, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny continued to earn decent numbers, but considering it’s an attempt to revive an iconic franchise, it’s not seen as a resounding success. After three weekends, Destiny has grossed $145 million, falling short of what Kingdom of the Crystal Skull earned in its first five days. The future of the Indiana Jones series remains uncertain, with potential reboots looming.
Lastly, The Little Mermaid concluded its run in the top ten with a total of $293 million, just shy of the $300 million mark. Despite its high production costs, Disney will likely label it a success and has announced an animated Disney Junior show based on the film. However, it’s clear that audience enthusiasm for this remake hasn’t matched previous Disney live-action adaptations, so the studio may take a different approach with future projects, such as next year’s Snow White.”
