Breaking News: Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ Set to Land on Disney+ Next Week
In a major announcement, it’s now official: Pixar’s much-anticipated film ‘Elemental’ is set to make its digital debut on Disney+ starting September 13. This comes just 89 days after the film’s initial theatrical release, which means that if you missed the opportunity to catch it on the big screen, you won’t have to wait long to enjoy it from the comfort of your home.
‘Elemental’ weaves a captivating tale centered around Ember, a fiery elemental character, whose unanticipated friendship with Wade, a water elemental known for his easygoing nature, challenges her preconceived notions about her way of life. The movie explores themes of friendship, identity, and the power of change, all set against a visually stunning backdrop that showcases Pixar’s unparalleled animation expertise.
However, it’s worth noting that ‘Elemental’ didn’t have the instant success that’s often associated with Pixar. It experienced a less-than-stellar opening weekend at the box office, raking in just $29.5 million domestically. To make matters more interesting, Pixar’s top brass, including Pete Docter, expressed bewilderment at the somewhat lukewarm critical reception the film received following its triumphant premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Pete Docter, reflecting on the rollercoaster of emotions, remarked, “That was a confusing half-hour there. The film played, we got a seven-minute standing ovation, and you could feel the love beaming down from the audience to [director Peter Sohn]. They really responded to it. Then the embargo lifted, and some of the reviews were pretty nasty.”
Fortunately, the story took a positive turn for ‘Elemental’ as it gradually gained momentum, eventually amassing a commendable $480 million at the global box office. This impressive figure catapulted the film into the ranks of 2023’s top 10 highest-grossing movies, firmly solidifying its place in cinematic history.
As part of the Disney+ release, viewers will also have access to an insightful making-of documentary titled ‘Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental.’ This documentary offers an intimate look into the creative journey of director Peter Sohn and provides fans with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the process of bringing ‘Elemental’ to life. Additionally, the Pixar short ‘Carl’s Date,’ which originally premiered in front of ‘Elemental’ in theaters, will also be available to stream on Disney+ starting September 13.
However, not all reviews have been glowing. IGN’s ‘Elemental’ review awarded the film a score of 6/10, praising its visually stunning depiction of Element City and its inhabitants. Yet, it criticized the storyline for its perceived lack of depth and coherence. While it acknowledged Pixar’s reputation for respecting its audience’s intelligence, the review noted that the film’s thematic and narrative execution might not fully resonate with either young or older viewers.
Despite the mixed reception, ‘Elemental’ undoubtedly remains a noteworthy addition to Pixar’s filmography and a testament to the studio’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of animation storytelling. With its imminent arrival on Disney+, viewers will soon have the opportunity to experience the magic of ‘Elemental’ for themselves and form their own opinions on this captivating and visually stunning cinematic adventure.
