Not impressed by Cinderella in 4K? Check out these 6 amazing Disney Plus films instead

Posted on August 27, 2023August 27, 2023 by CharlotteM

From timeless animated favorites to unexpected live-action selections, here are six top Disney Plus movies that support 4K.

The classic tale has now arrived at the 4K celebration. Yes, Disney’s 1950 masterpiece Cinderella is now accessible for streaming in Ultra High Definition (UHD) on Disney Plus.

Enhanced in 4K as part of Disney’s centennial festivities and to coincide with World Princess Week, Cinderella’s visual quality is sharper, more colorful, and pristine than ever before. While it’s a definite improvement from the past, it’s not the best 4K offering on the platform.

Unbeknownst to many, Cinderella isn’t the pioneer Disney film to receive the 4K treatment on Disney Plus, one of the world’s premier streaming services. Numerous movies are available in UHD on the platform. So, which ones are a must-watch right away—especially if you own one of the best 4K TVs around—but are unsure where to begin?

Below, we’ve highlighted six of the most visually appealing and unexpectedly supported 4K movies on Disney Plus. However, please note that we’ve excluded Marvel, Star Wars, and the original Avatar movie’s 4K upgrade, as these are already known for their stunning UHD visuals. Instead, enjoy this captivating lineup of 4K-compatible animated and live-action films.

  1. Beauty and the Beast We could have included either rendition of Beauty and the Beast, but we’ve chosen the more recent take on the timeless love story.

The 2017 hybrid featuring Emma Watson boasts captivating scenes that are further elevated when streamed in 4K. From the dazzling ‘Be Our Guest’ performance to the evocative rain-soaked sequences, the film’s beauty is heightened by the UHD experience. Notably, the iconic ballroom dance scene takes on an even more stunning appearance in 4K, showcasing the grandeur of the castle’s ballroom and the intimate waltz between Belle and Beast.

  1. Coco Pixar films seem tailor-made for 4K. With each new release, the visual allure of these Disney subsidiary films becomes more captivating, making it needless to elaborate on their quality.

Among Pixar’s recent works, 2017’s Coco stands out. This Mexican-inspired musical fantasy is a visual masterpiece with its richly textured visuals, vibrant colors, and subtle nods to the animated brilliance of Miyazaki. The 4K upgrade enhances the film’s artistic splendor, making it a must-watch.

  1. Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers Blending live-action with various animation styles, Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers is a visual treat in its 4K glory.

Drawing inspiration from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Rescue Rangers introduces the beloved chipmunk duo to a new generation while humorously critiquing corporate reboots. With intelligent humor, heartfelt moments, and a plethora of references, the film’s UHD support only heightens its appeal.

  1. Free Solo Among documentary films, few are as visually striking as Free Solo. This 2018 National Geographic production chronicles rock climber Alex Honnold’s groundbreaking free solo climb of Yosemite’s El Capitan.

While the suspense of Honnold’s climb is gripping, the 4K enhancement truly shines in capturing the intricacies of the climb. The UHD upgrade accentuates the vertigo-inducing camerawork and filmmaking techniques, creating a visually impactful experience that ranks among Disney Plus’s finest documentaries.

  1. The Princess Diaries 1 and 2 The inclusion of The Princess Diaries duology might surprise you. These Anne Hathaway-led romantic comedies are available in 4K on Disney Plus.

While their critical acclaim varies, the fact that these films are in 4K is a pleasant surprise in itself. Though not Disney’s most celebrated works, the availability of these films in UHD offers an unexpected viewing opportunity for fans of the series.

  1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? A game-changer in the realm of live-action-animated hybrid films, 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit? introduced pioneering filmmaking techniques that have influenced many subsequent productions.

Robert Zemeckis’ innovative noir-comedy, based on Gary K Wolf’s novel, was already visually captivating prior to its 4K remaster. The UHD upgrade enhances its visual appeal even further, creating a mesmerizing and inventive experience that cements the film’s status as a 4K gem on Disney Plus.
