In truth, the Old Town Playhouse is far from idleness, as we find ourselves on the brink of yet another bustling season of theatrical delights. As I’ve previously noted, the summer season at OTP is ingeniously orchestrated by the Young Company, who take center stage with their camps, workshops, and the ensuing productions that emerge from their creative endeavors.
Merely in the past month, we’ve been treated to the captivating renditions of “Newsies, JR.” and the heartwarming tale of “Babe the Sheep Pig.” An innovative addition to our repertoire is the Teen Studio Factory, which has proudly presented “Arc 5.” And the merriment is an ongoing affair.
Amidst this whirlwind of activity, we’re excited to announce the casting for the inaugural show of our 23-24 Season, the side-splittingly funny comedy, “Ripcord.” This comedic gem delves into the adventures and misadventures of two spirited women residing in an assisted living facility. One awaits the inevitable end, while the other seizes life’s offerings with unbridled enthusiasm. From the confines of the care facility to the heights of a carnival ride and even the exhilarating freefall of skydiving, these two seemingly disparate souls forge an unexpected bond that draws them closer than ever.
The theatrical voyage doesn’t end there. Behold, the unveiling of “Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood,” the first installment in our series of three Pop-up Studio shows. This contemporary, gender-bending comedy artfully turns the legendary narrative of Robin Hood on its head, introducing an innovative twist to this time-honored lore.
As the holiday season approaches, we’re delighted to present “The Christmas Schooner,” under the accomplished direction of Karla Fishburn, who previously steered the ship of last season’s comedic hit, “The Play That Goes Wrong.” This musical gem unearths the heartwarming saga of a dauntless Michigan ship captain who braves the treacherous winter elements to bring Christmas trees to homesick German-American families in turn-of-the-century Chicago.
As the new year dawns, the Young Company takes the stage with their rendition of “Puffs,” a whimsical tale of an ordinary lad discovering his extraordinary wizarding heritage, offering a charmingly unconventional counterpoint to the well-known Harry Potter narrative. Later in the month, we’re thrilled to showcase the work of the celebrated playwright Annie Baker through “Circle Mirror Transformation,” a meticulously crafted portrayal of a motley crew of lost souls, brimming with both hilarity and poignancy.
February arrives in a flourish with Disney’s enchanting retelling of “Beauty and the Beast,” a musical masterpiece that has captivated audiences across the globe. I can’t help but reminisce about directing this very production nearly two decades ago at OTP – time truly flies!
Intrigue and drama take center stage with “Radium Girls,” transporting us to the year 1926, a time when radium was hailed as a miraculous remedy, Madame Curie a luminary, and luminous watches a burgeoning trend. Yet, shadows loom as the young women tasked with painting these watches begin to fall mysteriously ill. The ensuing legal battle forms the backbone of this powerful and thought-provoking drama, rooted in a true story.
And then, heralding the arrival of spring, we proudly present “The Wedding Singer,” a musical adaptation of the beloved Adam Sandler film. Set in the vibrant landscape of 1985, this musical whirlwind carries us through big hair, upturned collars, and the captivating journey of Robbie Hart, New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. His life takes an unexpected turn when he’s jilted at the altar by his own fiancée. What ensues is a quest to win back his true love’s heart before she takes her vows elsewhere.
