Broadway actor Clifton Oliver, renowned for “The Lion King” and “In the Heights,” has died at 47

Posted on August 11, 2023 by CharlotteM

Renowned Broadway performer Clifton Oliver, celebrated for his remarkable portrayals of Simba in “The Lion King” and Benny in “In the Heights,” has tragically left us at the age of 47. The news of his passing was shared by his sister, Roxy Hall, who revealed that he had spent six weeks in a hospital and hospice prior to his departure. While the exact cause of his death remains unknown, his sister’s touching account indicated that he experienced a peaceful transition, with his partner Richard singing Psalm 23 as he took his last breath. Hall’s heartfelt Facebook post described his serene departure and the beauty of his final moments, as well as the deep impact Clifton had on those around him.

Clifton Oliver’s journey in the arts began early in his life, as he grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, with a strong passion for performing. He honed his talents at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and eventually made his way to New York City in 2010 to embark on a vibrant career in acting on the Broadway stage.

His theatrical achievements were indeed remarkable. Apart from his iconic roles as Simba and Benny, Oliver’s talents shone in the ensemble of “Wicked,” where he also served as an understudy for Fiyero. He graced the stages of both Broadway and Las Vegas as Simba in “The Lion King,” captivating audiences with his dynamic presence. Moreover, his artistry extended to the national tour of the same production, showcasing his versatility and ability to connect with diverse audiences.

Clifton Oliver’s contributions to the world of theater extended beyond the bright lights of Broadway. He enriched the touring casts of “Dreamgirls” and “Motown the Musical,” taking his talents to various corners of the country. Additionally, he made his mark in the off-Broadway productions of “Miracle Brothers” and “Bella: An American Tall Tale,” further demonstrating his dedication to his craft.

As news of his passing reverberated through the theater community, “The Lion King — Musical” Instagram account paid homage to Oliver’s legacy by sharing a poignant quote from Mufasa: “Look at the stars. The great kings of the past look down on us from those stars.” This sentiment aptly captures the enduring impact he has left on the world of performance art.

To honor his memory, a tribute is planned at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where a symbolic dimming of the lights will occur on August 8, 2023, at 5 PM EST. The Broadway community and audiences alike will come together to commemorate Clifton Oliver’s indelible mark on the stage, his vibrant spirit, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

As his loved ones and colleagues gather to remember his contributions, further details about a celebration of life for this beloved Broadway star will be shared in the days to come.
