“The 2019-2020 controversy surrounding Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan reportedly prompted changes in the studio’s filming procedures.
Amid significant backlash in 2020, Disney faced controversies tied to its live-action Mulan adaptation, including the revelation that parts of the movie were filmed in Xinjiang, also known as East Turkestan. This region has witnessed the Chinese Communist Party’s alleged genocide against the Uyghur population and other minorities.
In a meeting with Deadline, Representative Mike Gallagher shared insights from his discussion with Disney CEO Bob Iger, noting that Disney acknowledged the misstep and altered its processes in response. This decision apparently didn’t receive approval from higher Disney management, indicating a renewed procedure for vetting similar choices.
The conversation took place during a series of meetings between the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, led by Gallagher, and major companies in the entertainment and technology sectors. The objective was to address the Chinese government’s sway over U.S. businesses. This scrutiny emerges from concerns over Hollywood studios’ perceived self-censorship to maintain access to the Chinese market.
Mulan’s credits included acknowledgment of entities connected to the CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Committee, sparking unease about Disney’s collaboration with authorities involved in Uyghur persecution and repressive actions in the region. Although the U.S. had yet to formally acknowledge the Uyghur genocide, the cooperation raised eyebrows.
Upon Mulan’s release, political figures from the U.S. and UK criticized Disney for its associations. U.S. officials sought answers from then-CEO Bob Chapek regarding the film’s production circumstances and potential involvement with the Communist Party. While Disney maintained that filming locations were chosen for authenticity, not dictated by Chinese authorities, controversies persisted.
This wasn’t the only controversy tied to Mulan. Stars Liu Yifei and Donnie Yen faced backlash for their support of the Chinese Communist Party and Hong Kong government, amid the latter’s suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations. Yen’s remarks further fueled tensions.
Mulan is available for streaming on Disney+.”
