Walt Disney Pictures continues to captivate fans with an ever-growing lineup of live-action remakes, and one of the most successful adaptations in recent years has been 2019’s “The Lion King,” directed by Jon Favreau. This visually stunning film grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, showcasing the enduring popularity of the Lion King franchise. Now, Disney is not only planning a sequel to the beloved film but also exploring the possibility of expanding “The Lion King” into a sprawling universe akin to the legendary “Star Wars” saga.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Sean Bailey, the president of Walt Disney Pictures, revealed that there is immense potential for “The Lion King” to become a grand, epic saga similar to “Star Wars.” Bailey expressed the studio’s interest in finding compelling stories that could expand the Lion King universe. While specific details were not disclosed, this revelation hints at the potential for future films and television series set within the Lion King world. This ambitious approach draws inspiration from the success of the Star Wars franchise, which has seen continuous expansion since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, with multiple films in development and a rich slate of TV shows on the horizon.
While the extent of the Lion King universe remains to be seen, there is already concrete progress on expansion. “Mufasa: The Lion King,” a live-action prequel exploring the origins of Simba’s father, is currently in development. Award-winning director Barry Jenkins, known for his work on “Moonlight,” is set to helm this highly anticipated project. James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in the original animated film, will not be returning. Instead, Aaron Pierre will portray a younger version of the iconic lion, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. takes on the role of Mufasa’s brother, Scar. Additionally, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani are reprising their roles as Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki, respectively, adding continuity to the Lion King universe.
Disney’s focus on live-action adaptations is not surprising, given the tremendous success of the 2019 Lion King film and the ongoing production of “Mufasa: The Lion King.” In recent years, the studio has dedicated significant attention to reimagining beloved animated classics in live-action form. It all began with Jon Favreau’s 2016 adaptation of “The Jungle Book,” which paved the way for subsequent films like 2019’s “Aladdin,” 2020’s “Mulan,” and 2021’s “Cruella.” The latest addition to this lineup is “The Little Mermaid,” directed by Rob Marshall and currently enchanting audiences in theaters. Starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy, this film has already proven successful, grossing $326 million worldwide.
However, Disney’s live-action endeavors are far from over, as the studio has an extensive slate of remakes in the works. Next in line is “Snow White,” an adaptation of Disney’s inaugural animated feature. This reimagining features Rachel Zegler in the title role, alongside the talented Gal Gadot. While many of the live-action remakes have focused on older films, Disney is also exploring fresh projects, such as upcoming adaptations of “Lilo & Stitch” and “Moana,” which was originally released a mere seven years ago.
With “Mufasa: The Lion King” set to roar into theaters on July 5, 2024, fans can eagerly anticipate the further expansion of the Lion King universe. As Disney continues to weave magic through its live-action ventures, the possibility of a sprawling Lion King saga akin to the iconic Star Wars franchise brings excitement and anticipation for what the future holds in the Pride Lands and beyond.
