Despite protests from Lewis Hamilton, the FIA has confirmed that Fernando Alonso defended fairly and let Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon to win the Hungarian Grand Prix.
As the Brit tried to catch Ocon, Hamilton accused Alonso of weaving all over the track, making more than his one allotted defensive move, and then cutting across a turn to stay ahead of him.
Ross Brawn, now of the FIA, disagreed, and in a line written by the former Ferrari boss, he labelled Alonso his driver of the day.
“There was the real battle between Fernando and Lewis. I’m glad Fernando was Driver of the Day because I also want to give him my vote, he had a great performance,” Brawn declared.
“What you see when Fernando is in Formula 1 are incredibly tough battles, but you always know that it will be clean.
“I know Lewis was complaining a bit about Fernando’s defence, but I didn’t see any problems, he was tough and clean as he always is, he gave enough space which is what he has to do.”
