During its original run from October 24, 1994, to February 15, 1997, the animated series Gargoyles garnered a loyal fanbase and developed a cult following. Interestingly, despite being produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, the show was not known as “Disney’s Gargoyles” at the time. Only recently, with its availability on the Disney+ streaming service, did it adopt that branding. Greg Weisman, the creator of Gargoyles, has shed light on this curious omission.
Responding to a fan on Twitter, Weisman disclosed that Disney had reservations about associating its name with the series during its original airing. In fact, he stated that Disney was “afraid to put its name on the series back then,” highlighting that technically it was referred to as “Buena Vista’s Gargoyles.” While Weisman did not delve into specific reasons for this caution, it can be inferred that Disney may have been concerned about the show’s darker and more dramatic tone, which deviated from the typical expectations of a “children’s” animated series.
The fan-favorite Gargoyles series portrayed a captivating narrative centered around ancient creatures known as gargoyles, who were cursed to remain in stone during the day but awakened as fierce warriors by night. Betrayed by the very humans they had sworn to protect, these gargoyles were frozen in time by a powerful spell for a millennium. The story resumed in modern-day Manhattan when the spell was broken, and the gargoyles resumed their duty as defenders of the night.
Despite the passionate demand from fans for a fourth season, the likelihood of its production remains slim. However, Gargoyles found a continuation of its story in a 12-issue comic series published by Slave Labor Graphics. This comic series allowed fans to further immerse themselves in the rich universe of Gargoyles, exploring the complex interplay between humans and gargoyles and delving deeper into their extraordinary adventures.
In retrospect, the delayed association of the Disney brand with Gargoyles during its initial airing did not diminish the show’s impact and enduring popularity. Its unique blend of mythology, intricate storytelling, and mature themes captivated audiences, leading to its well-deserved status as a beloved cult classic among fans who continue to celebrate its timeless appeal.
