With a minor alteration, My Hero Academia could have reached new heights

Posted on June 8, 2023June 7, 2023 by CharlotteM

“My Hero Academia, one of Shonen Jump’s top series, could have been significantly enhanced with a simple modification. Despite its current acclaim, there is a small change that would address several major issues within the story.

Created by Kohei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia centers around students attending U.A. High School, a prestigious institution for aspiring superheroes. However, as the series approaches its conclusion, the characters have only completed a single year of their studies, which presents a potential problem for the overall narrative.

The students of U.A. High have faced numerous adversaries, such as the League of Villains, led by the formidable All For One and his successor, Shigaraki. All For One’s primary objective is to capture the protagonist Deku, whose quirk serves as the opposite counterpart to his own. The League of Villains consistently disrupts school events and forces the students into the midst of escalating conflicts. Furthermore, All For One plants a traitor among Deku’s class, revealing some of the significant challenges faced in My Hero Academia. While these conflicts have been engaging, they could have been even more impactful if the manga’s structure had been slightly adjusted.

My Hero Academia would have greatly benefited from better pacing. As the series nears its conclusion, Deku and his classmates have yet to complete a full year of school. This poses an awkward situation where, following a climactic battle against the forces of villainy, the students would need to return to their regular high school lives for two more years. While this might appear as a well-deserved respite after intense fighting, it becomes impractical considering there would be little left to teach them. By pacing the story more evenly and distributing major events across the three years of high school, this issue, along with other shortcomings, could have been resolved.

One common critique of My Hero Academia is the lack of development for its side characters. Prior to the Final War arc, many students like Shoji Koda received minimal attention and growth. However, by incorporating brief time skips to cover the passage of time throughout their high school years, the manga could have subtly infused character development into their changing designs. One Piece effectively executed this approach with the Straw Hats’ post-time skip designs, and My Hero Academia could have followed suit. Additionally, the passage of time would have made character growth feel more organic and significant. Moments like the reveal of Class 1-A’s traitor would have carried greater weight and impact.

Despite My Hero Academia currently being in its final arc, Horikoshi still has the opportunity to deliver a satisfying ending that justifies condensing the events of the manga into a single year. Even with the potential improvements that this change could have brought, the series remains one of Shonen Jump’s finest. Nevertheless, it feels like a missed opportunity for My Hero Academia not to align its ending with the completion of its main characters’ high school journeys.”
