Disturbing news surrounding Jujutsu Kaisen has been making the rounds on various platforms recently. Fortunately, the news doesn’t directly involve the anime or manga itself, but instead reveals a dark truth about one of the individuals associated with this highly regarded manga.
Stefan Koza, a former translator for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, has been convicted of eight counts of child pornography. On April 26th, the Fairfax County Circuit Court of Virginia announced that Koza, 36 years old, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for each of the eight counts. These sentences will run concurrently, totaling ten years of imprisonment. Additionally, his sentence includes a seven-year suspension.
As part of his sentence, Koza is required to register as a sex offender in the State of Virginia. He will be subject to strict supervised probation and will be prohibited from owning any devices, including those with internet access or recording capabilities like cameras. Furthermore, the court has mandated that the former manga translator undergo mental health counseling specifically tailored for sex offenders and cover all related fees.
Koza’s arrest in December 2020 was the result of suspicions regarding his possession and distribution of child pornography. Through a thorough investigation conducted by the Herndon Police Department in Virginia, in collaboration with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Taskforce, Stefan Koza’s arrest became possible.
According to police reports and court records, law enforcement officers arrived at Koza’s residence in December 2020 with a search warrant. Upon their arrival, Koza attempted to dispose of certain parts of his computer containing child pornography that he had downloaded through the BitTorrent network. He went to the basement to hide the evidence in a wooded area but was unsuccessful. When questioned by the police about why he had gone to the woods to dispose of the evidence, Koza claimed it was due to nervousness and panic.
Stefan Koza was released on recognizance, without the need to pay bail, but he had to sign an agreement promising to appear in court on December 15, 2020. Viz Media confirmed through Anime News Network that Koza had ceased working for the company following his arrest.
Furthermore, this is not the first time Koza has faced legal trouble. In 2014, he was arrested under suspicion of trespassing and recording in an all-girls elementary school’s dressing room. He was arrested on July 15th after the Kami school filed a complaint against their former assistant language teacher (ALT), who had worked with them in August of 2009. In that case, Koza received a three-year probation and was ordered by the court to return to the United States.
Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have expressed their disappointment and disgust upon learning about Koza’s actions. This case serves as a reminder to prioritize the protection of vulnerable individuals, particularly children. It is crucial for everyone to raise awareness and take a firm stance against any form of child abuse.
