The third part of the final season of Attack on Titan presents a surprising turn of events in which Eren appears to be intentionally allowing Mikasa and the rest of his friends the freedom to try and defeat him. This has led to speculation that Eren may actually want to be stopped and that the genocidal plan he is executing is taking a toll on him. There are moments in the show where Eren displays an uncharacteristic show of empathy and regret, such as when he rescues a young boy from a violent beating and then bursts into tears, knowing the boy will die in the rumbling.
While Eren’s decision to allow his friends to fight him could be interpreted as him wanting his plan to fail, it could also come from his attachment to them. Eren may not believe that his friends can stop him, but he may be allowing them to try as a last show of affection for his childhood friends. Furthermore, Eren’s tears at the impending massacre suggest that the toll this is taking on his conscience is immense.
Ultimately, it’s unlikely that the audience will get a clear answer as to whether Eren truly wants to be stopped. Even if he does, it may not matter once the dust settles and only a few have survived the fight. However, it’s possible that deep inside his soul, the child Eren once was is still looking for a way beyond the wall and is hoping for his friends to find a better path to peace.
